Reprise Records Ever since a November 2008 car accident, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has mostly been in a coma. In the meantime, the band has continued to write and tour with replacement bassist Sergio Vega. Last night, though, Deftones came closer to having Chi back than they’ve been in nearly four years, as the band invited Chi’s son Gabe onstage to perform with them in San Francisco. Deftones are currently on the road with Scars on Broadway , touring to promote their upcoming album ‘Koi No Yokan,’ which is set to be released on Nov. 13. The California-based act visited the state’s capital Sacramento last night (Oct. 10) and performed ‘Root’ with Gabe Cheng manning the bass. Gabe handled himself like a pro while playing ‘Root,’ which has a distinct bass line throughout the song, continuing at times even when the guitar, drums and vocals drop out. Fans showed an incredible amount of love for Gabe as he headbanged his way through ‘Root,’ showcasing the inherent talent from his father. After many years in the hospital, Chi is currently recuperating at home in a minimally conscious state, although he has been repeatedly fighting off both pneumonia and urinary tract infections. Kevin Winter, Getty Images We’re beginning to think that Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan may have a grudge against some of his former bandmates. Additionally, and this might be a bit of a stretch, but Corgan seems to also enjoy the occasional trash-talking session. Finally, and by all means correct us if we’re wrong, it seems possible that Billy Corgan may possess some sort of internal turmoil. We developed this hypothesis after reading a recent statement from Corgan, where he threw some ill will at some former Smashing Pumpkins members, while analyzing his personal life as well. Injecting a bit of positivity into his recent interview with SFweekly.com , Corgan described his relationships with the new Pumpkins members and how it has affected him creatively. “When you actually like each other,” Corgan explains, “it translates to the music. The difference with Oceania is, I’ve found harmony again.” This seems to be a welcome change for the iconic frontman, who compared the current lineup to various ‘classic’ Pumpkins configurations. “There’s no way to properly convey what it was like to be in that band,” Corgan says about the original lineup. “And the f—ed up stuff is 10 times more f—ed up than what the world knows. I was in love with the Smashing Pumpkins,” he says, sounding wistful. “I really believed in what we were doing. But I idealized the band — which overlooked their incredibly flawed human personas, and which now bites me in the ass, as they rear their heads for lawsuits.” He then waxes philosophically on his personal life, stating, “If somebody would have told me 15 years ago that at 45 I’d be living in a big house with two dogs and two cats, with no wife and no girlfriend, I wouldn’t have believed them. My life did not turn out the way I’d planned it. Okay, it’s not that big of a deal, as Bruce Dickinson spoke at the IBM Smarter Business event in Stockholm, Sweden, on Oct. 10 to draw parallels between music and business. Dickinson’s address included his own experiences as a successful musician and even revealed one of his super-secret compositional strategy behind the classic Maiden track ‘Run to the Hills.’ Dickinson explained a strange day in his life to the crowd: the day he realized that people were referring to the vocalist as a “businessman.” It’s not too far of a leap, as Iron Maiden have put many of music’s greatest sonic and materialistic products, but how does the term “businessman” sit with Dickinson? “I’ve had some strange experiences in my life”, begins Dickinson, “and one of the strangest was waking up one day and discovering that people called be a businessman, which is very odd.” Dickinson goes on to describe the role that creativity has played in the mind of history’s greatest minds. “Leonardo DiVinci invents the helicopter … he imagined it and eventually it happened. Jules Verne invented the nuclear submarine, he just didn’t know about nuclear reactors. He imagined it, and that inspired generations of people to invent things. Einstein, of course, who was the kid at school who would never amount to much because he was rubbish at physics and didn’t pay any attention in class, said, ‘Imagination is greater than knowledge.’ If you can’t imagine it, it will never happen.” As for composing the legendary ‘Run to the Hills,’ Dickinson revealed the inspiration for the song came from the analysis of a television musicologist. “The program was about why the song ‘My Way’ (Frank Sinatra), was the most popular recorded song in history,” begins Dickinson. “The musicologist came along and said, ‘It’s all in the rising sixth.’” Referring to the sixth interval within a scale, Dickinson went on to give a vocal example of ‘My Way’ versus ‘Run to the Hills.’ Check out highlights of Bruce Dickinson’s IBM speech along with his vocal demonstration in the videos below. Roadrunner Records As anticipation builds for the Oct. 22 release of Stone Sour ‘s fourth album ‘ House of Gold & Bones Part 1 ,’ the band has released the video for ‘Gone Sovereign.’ P.R. Brown, who has worked on several previous Stone Sour and Slipknot videos, directed ‘Gone Sovereign.’ The performance clip begins with the band tightly grouped around Roy Mayorga’s drum kit, then once the song kicks in, the shot widens to reveal they are in a club playing for frenzied fans. The second half of the two part concept album is due next year. Singer Corey Taylor is also creating a comic book to go along with the ‘House of Gold & Bones’ albums. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Taylor. “I’ve always been very critical of when comics go south and basically pull the fan out of what the potential is. It’s me pretty much putting my money where my mouth is.” He is scheduled to be at New York’s Comic Con this weekend to promote the comic. Stone Sour are set to embark on a world tour at the end of this month. Razor & Tie Hatebreed , a Connecticut hardcore institution, have a new label home for their next album, due to drop in January 2013. The band has signed to Razor & Tie in North America, while Nuclear Blast will handle Hatebreed’s releases in European territories. Hatebreed have already finished their new studio album – their sixth — which will see release in early winter, just in time to cure the January doldrums. It follows 2009′s self-titled release and the ‘For the Lions’ covers album, which also landed in 2009. Both of those records were issued via eOne. Frontman Jamey Jasta commented on the signing, saying, “We’re really excited to be working with such great people at both Razor & Tie and Nuclear Blast. We’ve made an awesome album and we’re chomping at the bit to get it out and hit the road. Global domination begins now.” The new album was co-produced by Hatebreed, Zeuss (who has worked with everyone from Suicide Silence to Shadows Fall ) and Josh Wilbur ( Lamb of God , Avenged Sevenfold ). YouTube Powerful music often elicits involuntary responses. A smile. The chills. Goosebumps. Tears. You can’t fight the response that your body and your heart have to a quality, high impact song. Anthrax frontman Joey Belladonna is no different than the rest of us when it comes to his response to music. He was so moved by the new Sevendust song ‘Blackout’ that he got goosebumps and almost cried. Sevendust are currently recording their new album in New Jersey and they have shared many a video update on the process, looping fans into the Sevendust way. In this particular clip, Belladonna is on site, seated, listening to the music in the studio, staring intently, absorbing every note while nodding along to the melody. He is surrounded by singer Lajon Witherspoon and drummer Morgan Rose. He makes the grim metal face for a hot second, and then shows his arms, indicating that he has goosebumps or that the babyfine hairs are standing on end as a result of listening to the song. That’s power! He then says, “That makes me cry” and wipes his eye. We don’t full on see the vocalist shed a tear, but he is visibly moved by the song, which is reportedly about the passing of guitarist Clint Lowery’s father. The two stars operate on two very different sides of the political spectrum, but in this short film titled ‘Americans,’ the duo are able to find a peaceful friendship in each other, while Penn persuades Kid Rock to buy a Prius, Kid Rock replaces Penn’s martini with a good ol’ brewski, and much more. The video begins with an irritable Sean Penn walking into a bar, faced with a Mitt Romney speech on the television, with Kid Rock performing in support of the Republican Presidential candidate. After asking a bartender to change the channel, Penn notices that Kid Rock, draped in a pair of overalls, happens to be at the very same drinking establishment. A brilliant war of words develops, as Penn calls Kid Rock a “seal-clubbing, Confederate flag-waving, oil-whoring, ‘Chick-fil-A’-eating, waterboarding, NASCAR-loving, Caiman Island bank account-having, endangered species hunting, warmongering, redneck, toothless, Wall Street troglodyte.” Kid Rock responds by pinning Penn as a “tofu-munching, welfare-loving, Prius-driving, Obama-sucking, tree-hugging, whale-saving, gay marriage-fantasizing, big government-voting, PETA-chasing, Oprah Winfrey-masturbating, flag-burning, socialist, ACLU, whiney-ass granola-crat.” Before a fight breaks out between the two, common ground is discovered which unites the duo, inspiring them experience the life of their political contrarians. The rest of the video is hilarious, and absolutely worth a good watch. “The goal of the film is to tear down the one-dimensional political stereotypes portrayed by the media by confronting them head on,” reads the video’s description. “It reminds us that what really matters is that we’re all Americans, with diverse thoughts, opinions and stances on issues.
