Black Sabbath + Slipknot to Headline Two-Day Ozzfest Japan

Scott Gries / Lisa Maree Williams, Getty Images The news keeps coming out of the Black Sabbath camp. Not long after it was revealed that the band was planning an April 2013 release and Australian tour , the group was officially confirmed for Japan’s inaugural Ozzfest . They’ll headline night two on May 12 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, Japan, while Slipknot have now been confirmed to finish out night one on May 11. Sharon Osbourne recently announced the return of Ozzfest, stating, “ Ozzy [Osbourne] and I want to tell you that [in] May 2013, we’ll be bringing Ozzfest to Japan for the first time ever. We are so excited. Please be there because we love you Japan.” Osbourne has spent a good portion of the last year with the reunited Black Sabbath working on their first studio album together since 1978. The group had plans to tour last year, but settled for a handful of one-off performances while guitarist Tony Iommi recovered from chemotherapy dealing with his cancer. By the time Black Sabbath reaches Ozzfest, they will be plenty warmed up as the group just announced four shows in Australia in late April and early May. Slipknot, meanwhile, are on what Corey Taylor calls a “ hiatus ,” but the singer admitted that the group would be playing sparingly next year. Ozzfest now joins an appearance at the Download Festival . Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Discusses Being Hit by Beer + Rocks at Croatian Festival

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com You may remember an incident in Croatia earlier this year where Megadeth were pelted with beer bottles and rocks after a group of fans blamed the ‘Big 4′ thrash act for W.A.S.P. no-showing at the festival. After frontman Dave Mustaine was hit in the head with a rock, the band ended their set early. Now, nearly four months later, Mustaine has spoken out about the event in a new interview. After being asked by Powerline about the online backlash to some of Mustaine’s controversial comments, such as speaking out against gay marriage and claiming that President Obama “was born somewhere else than America ” even after Obama’s long-form birth certificate was released, Mustaine eventually made his way to the Croatian incident. Mustaine mistakenly placed the event in the Czech Republic rather than Croatia, but he still recalled the situation with vivid detail: I treat people the way I want to be treated. Even when we were in the Czech Republic and people were upset about the whole debacle with W.A.S.P. not playing and took it out on us. That wasn’t our fault but they still were taking it out on us and when we were in Dubai we did a meet-and-greet and a woman and her little boy came up. And she said, “Yeah, he saw you in the Czech Republic and he was supposed to meet you after the concert and you guys finished early.” And I was gonna say, “Yeah, but …” and she said, “He cried because he didn’t get to meet you.” And I thought, “You know what?! Son of a gun …” The guys that acted out there, I understand why they did that. They wanted to see W.A.S.P., they don’t know why that they didn’t play and somebody had said something that it was our fault. It wasn’t our fault. We don’t decide whether W.A.S.P. plays or not. And they had been out in the sun drinking and they thought it was a novel way to express their disdain for the way things took place was to throw objects at us. I understand. I totally understand. I would have handled it a little bit different. I’m not a p—y who throws rocks at artists. They may not love me, but I still have love in my heart for them. And I’m not going to write the Czech Republic off just because of these few people who mishandled themselves that day. I think that if the guys who actually did that, if we sat down and talked, we’d probably have a lot in common. Because I don’t dislike W.A.S.P. I’m actually friends with Blackie [Lawless] and I probably would have wanted to see them play as much as their fans did — well, probably not as much, but it’s funny how similar a lot of us are when you get down to it, but this mob mentality gets people fired up and you’re afraid to say what your convictions really are because … You know, I saw a letter about three years ago. It was the vice president of GE and I’m thinking it was an open letter about how afraid he was about the way things were going and how he doesn’t think he’ll be able to write the same letter several years later because of the fact that if anybody who says anything negative right now about a politician is going to be vilified and, man, damn if he wasn’t right. Metallica were a last minute addition to the Voodoo festival lineup, as original Saturday headliners Green Day bowed out after singer Billie Joe Armstrong ‘s recent admittance to rehab. Guitarist Kirk Hammett stated , “I’m very honored that we’re able to help our friends in Green Day. I wish Billie Joe the best of luck, we’ll do anything to help them out. It’s great to be able to help him out.” Of the event itself, Hammett gushed, “New Orleans during Halloween, I’m really excited about that. I love New Orleans, I love the voodoo folklore, I love the vampire folklore. It should be pretty interesting.” While the band have curtailed their touring for the time being, Voodoo gives the group the perfect showcase in advance of their ‘ Quebec Magnetic ‘ DVD, which is slated for a Dec. 10 release. Lars Ulrich stated earlier this year that he thought it would be 2014 before fans would see a new record, which means studio time will likely take up a good portion of next year. Green Day Producer: Billie Joe Armstrong Could Be in Rehab for a While

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Last month after an onstage breakdown during the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong checked into rehab for substance abuse. Now, Warner Bros. Records Chairman and producer Rob Cavallo is opening up about the potentially long road ahead for Armstrong and the band. Commenting on the seriousness of Armstrong’s condition, Cavallo told Rolling Stone that “his rehab is no joke” and that Armstrong is “under medical supervision for a while to get him clean.” Green Day already canceled their headlining spot at the Voodoo Music and Arts Experience at the end of October ( with Metallica filling in for them ), but the band has additional tour dates kicking off in November. Judging by Cavallo’s comments, more cancellations may be coming. “His doctors are still evaluating,” Cavallo said. “All I can say is I don’t know if we’ll see him before or after Christmas. It’s basically undetermined when he’ll be back.” Bassist Mike Dirnt also recently spoke out about Armstrong’s current state of mind in an interview with BBC Radio 1 citing that the pressure of promoting three albums at one time weighed on all of them. “With hindsight 20/20, it was a tremendous undertaking,” Dirnt admitted. “Although we were having fun, we didn’t take our nose out of the book for a long time. I think it catches up with you a little bit. We definitely just jumped off a moving train.” He also said that Armstrong’s breakdown wasn’t a complete shock. “There were signs of things hitting the fan,” he said. “We hadn’t slept in forever and Billie had definitely had the worst of it.” He continued, explaining, “He’d been going through his own struggles . . . We were there with him, but you can only handle things on your own . . . At the end of the day, when we got off the road, the most important thing was my friend’s life.” Here’s wishing Armstrong a speedy recovery and a quick return to the stage. Metallica Officially Replace Green Day as 2012 ‘Voodoo Music + Arts Experience’ Headliners

Metallica.com After pop-punk legends Green Day chose to withdraw as headliners of the 2012 ‘Voodoo Music + Arts Experience’ due to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong entering rehab for substance abuse, the band’s replacement has just been named. The replacement headliners just happen to be the most commercially successful metal band in history, Metallica . Now that Green Day have  pulled out of the festival, this will mark Metallica’s first New Orleans performance since 2008, and Metallica now join Neil Young, Jack White , Die Antwoord, Skrillex and many more artists at the ‘Voodoo’ festival. Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming festival date. “We are excited to be part of our first ever Voodoo Music + Arts Experience,” says Ulrich. “Our good friends and fellow Bay Area residents Green Day had to unfortunately cancel their plans to be there, so we are more than happy to fill in for them in our own unique way. We’re hoping we can fill those very large shoes and do them proud.” Founder and producer of ‘Voodoo,’ Stephen Rehage also shared his excitement, along with relief in a new press statement. “After a hectic few days – and sleepless nights – having Metallica, one of the world’s greatest bands agree to perform at Voodoo in the place of Green Day, only two weeks before the festival, feels pretty surreal at the moment – like being part of rock & roll history in the making… something you will tell your grandkids about years from now,” says Rehage. “We are incredibly grateful to Metallica and their management team for supporting us in this unprecedented manner. I am sure Metallica’s performance at Voodoo will be remembered for many years to come.” The 2012 ‘Voodoo Music + Arts Experience’ will mark the 14th anniversary of the outing, and will be held on Oct. 26-28, with Metallica playing the Oct. 27 date.
