Machine Head’s Robb Flynn Reflects on the Death of Metallica’s Cliff Burton

Machinehead1.com Metallica ‘s Cliff Burton is one of the most beloved figures in the history of hard rock and metal and his memory lives on with the legacy of the band’s early albums. One of the future rockers who was influenced by the work of Burton and his Metallica bandmates was Machine Head ‘s Robb Flynn , who posted a new journal entry reflecting on what Burton meant to him in honor of the celebration of the bassist’s birthday. “It’s amazing to think how the music world may (or may not) have been different had the tragic bus accident not taken his life,” says Flynn, who has been reflecting on the times he actually got to see Burton perform in his youth. He recalls hanging out with his friend Jim Pittman as a kid and the first time he heard ‘Kill ‘Em All.’ The frontman says, “We’d never heard anything like it. We gleefully stumbled around the running track behind American High School for hours and probably played ‘Whiplash’ fifty times in a row, headbanging wildly the whole time. What a great memory! Still blasting the bootleg, we stumbled back to my house where my parents were gone, we vowed to jam more and to get better at our own band … and to see Metallica the next time they played.” After catching a ride from his dad, Flynn says he had the time of his life. He recalls, “When Metallica took the stage, the world came alive … When it came time for Cliff’s ‘(Anesthesia) – Pulling Teeth’ bass solo, I just remember being mesmerized. I’d had so many metal debates with Jim and other friends that there’s no way that was a ‘bass’ solo. It was a ‘guitar’ solo. Fact. End-of-story. My mind was blown.” Flynn says Metallica’s works with Burton have resonated with him to this day. He explains, “The bass lines were hypnotizing me ever-so-subtly to the point where even now, I know every bass line on those albums like it’s part of my DNA. Go and listen to our song ‘Now I Lay Thee Down’; the triad bass line in the chorus? That’s just one of my tributes to Cliff. The three-part lead section in the middle … I wrote that with Cliff looking over me. Hell, I called it ‘the Cliff part.’” When Burton died in a tragic bus crash, Flynn said it was one of those occasions he’ll always remember exactly where he was when he heard the news. “I was at a kegger party in Cliff’s hometown, Castro Valley, wired and drunk when ‘the news’ came on. 10PM, someone I didn’t know came running into the backyard and yelled, ‘Cliff’s dead, Cliff from Metallica is dead!,’” Flynn recalls. “It was unreal. A stunned silence took over the party. They were ‘our’ band. This didn’t happen to ‘us.’” In the years since Burton’s death, Flynn says he’s read the Joel McIver biography on Burton and learned about how some diehard Metallica fans had made a memorial to the bassist at the site of the bus crash in Sweden. To pay homage, Flynn says he too made the pilgrimage during a tour of Sweden and stopped to leave a guitar pick with the mementos that many fans had left. He concludes, “As this Sunday (Feb. 10) comes to pass, I’m sure in our own way, some of us will pay tribute to a man whose attitude, demeanor, vibe, genuine love of music and unequaled talent affected us. I know I will. Happy birthday Cliff Burton, rest in peace.” To read Flynn’s full posting on Burton, click here . Drowning Pool, ‘One Finger and a Fist’ Lyric Video – Exclusive Premiere

Facebook: Drowning Pool It looks as though Drowning Pool  are maintaining their aggression with new singer Jasen Moreno leading the way. The new track ‘One Finger and a Fist’ is an amped up rocker and Drowning Pool are exclusively premiering the lyric video for the song right here at Loudwire. ‘One Finger and a Fist’ could arguably be one of the band’s most confrontational songs, boasting the lyrics, “ I’ve got news for you / you’re not the first one, won’t be the last / Won’t take abuse from you / I see you run, son, you’re running fast .” The band also states in the chorus, “ One finger and a fist / I’ll claw my way out any situation .” For the video, the lyrics fly at the viewer at rapid speed while set against the backdrop of computer generated visual effects mimicking hands, arms and a certain finger that appear occasionally independent of a full body. ‘One Finger and a Fist’ was offered as a free download for a limited period back in December. It’s also one of the key tracks to their first album with Moreno on vocals. Other cuts that have been heard since Moreno took over include ‘In Memory Of …, ‘ a song that was issued as a tribute to the band’s original frontman, the late Dave Williams, and their recent single, ‘ Saturday Night .’ Drowning Pool will hit the road  in February, sharing the stage with another act employing a new vocalist — Flyleaf . The trek runs through March 24. Details on Drowning Pool’s new album are expected very shortly. Danko Jones Pays Tribute to Late Sitar Pioneer Ravi Shankar

Carlos Muina / Hulton Archive Express Newspapers, Getty Images Danko Jones is one of the more outspoken musicians in rock and his viewpoint and willingness to speak out has made him the perfect guest columnist for the Huffington Post. This past week, the world lost music great Ravi Shankar  who died at the age of 92 and Jones decided to dedicate this week’s column to remembering the sitar icon and Beatles  collaborator and relating it to his own experiences with music growing up. Jones reveals that he came from an academic family and that he and his parents rarely saw eye-to-eye on his passion for music, but while they didn’t always agree, one moment of bonding came when they took him to see Shankar at a young age. He explains, “I’m very grateful to my parents whether they realize it or not. I’m grateful to them for instilling me with a set of morals that I use as a compass to this day. I’m grateful for their love and care and their best intentions for me at all times. And I am grateful for that night they took me out, to stay up way past my bedtime, to see Ravi Shankar play with Alla Rakha at the Minkler Auditorium which used to be part of the Seneca College Newham Campus in Willowdale, Ontario when I was eight-years-old.” The singer recalls, “I do remember that I was so not psyched to be in the audience before the show started. I saw a few long hairs and figured it must be a rock concert of some sort, but knew my parents HATED rock music, so it was confusing … My most vivid memory of watching this intimate performance, in basically a glorified college lecture hall, is watching Shankar play on the floor with his eyes closed — which I found mildly impressive — with his trusted tabla player, Alla Rakha, beating out rhythms by his side.” Jones continues, “No matter how many great bands and great shows I’ve witnessed over the years, there’s no show that carries the weight of this one. And even though I didn’t appreciate the moment while it was happening, I remembered that feeling 15 years later when it hit me like a thunderbolt. My mind was being expanded and my music tastes widening, and I had seen Ravi Shankar . I remember sitting in my room kicking myself for not taking it all in properly. Even when I found out Shankar had passed away late this past Tuesday, it took me a full 10 minutes to remember that I had indeed seen him perform all those many years ago, so surreal is the memory.” Jones says he never had a chance to see Shankar perform again, but his love for classical Indian music grew over time to the point where he took a World Music class at York University. He adds, “When my father made a trip home to New Delhi one year, I begged him to bring back as much Shankar music as he could fit in his luggage. I think the request surprised him but he gladly obliged. Coming from a household where academia was valued above all else and seeing the quiet sting of disappointment in my parent’s eyes when I chose a musical vocation, they can’t deny that by exposing me to Ravi Shankar at such an early age they were complicit in this rock ‘n’ roll thing I call a ‘job.’” To read more of Danko Jones’ columns, check out his Huffington Post archive here [button href=”http://loudwire.com/danko-jones-just-a-beautiful-day-exclusive-video-premiere/” title=”Next: Watch Danko Jones’ ‘Just a Beautiful Day’ Video” align=”center”]

Suicide Silence’s Mitch Lucker Saluted with Candlelight Vigil

Century Media Hours after the death of Suicide Silence singer Mitch Lucker, his friends, family and fans began to organize tributes to the vocalist to honor his memory. In Huntington Beach, Calif., where Lucker perished on his motorcycle, fans and some of his family members gathered for a candlelight vigil at the light pole that the singer hit. Among those in attendance were Lucker’s wife Jolie and his five-year-old daughter Kendalee. Meanwhile, back in Riverside, Calif., where Lucker grew up, family members gathered to celebrate his life. According to reports, Lucker was riding his 2013 Harley-Davidson on Main Street Wednesday night when he hit a light pole near the intersection of 13th street. After impact, the motorcycle continued to slide south and struck a pickup truck coming the opposite direction. The frontman was seriously injured and treated by paramedics before passing away at 6:00AM the following morning. According to Blabbermouth , the singer’s wife, Jolie Carmadella, said that the singer had made the decision to drink and ride. She explained that she didn’t know why he left home Wednesday night and didn’t know where he was going, but she did reveal she found some empty containers at home. When asked what message she had after Lucker’s death, she replied, “Just make the right choice. Don’t hurt your family. Don’t drink and drive.” Sharing his fondness for motorcycles, Lucker told Alternative Press in a recent interview, “The danger in it [attracts me]. Being a frontman in a band, you get addicted to adrenaline rushes. When you’re onstage, there’s not more of a rush. When I get home from touring, I need to find something to match that so I don’t get my adrenaline withdrawals. Being exposed to every element of danger while your sitting on a motor — that, to me, is freedom.” Footage of the Mitch Lucker tributes can be seen in the video clips below.
