Tool Receive Praise From Members of Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Gojira + More

Tool Dissectional Tool are one of the most critically praised and fan-worshipped bands in the world. The experimental quartet are musically complex, influential and incredibly original with both their music and videos. To celebrate the band (and probably to encourage them to finish their fifth studio album), some of today’s finest musicians, such as Tom Morello and Rob Trujillo , have praised the Los Angeles manipulators of sound. In an Artist Direct original column, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello recalls witnessing Tool’s very first show “There was a band called Green Jello, who later changed its name to Green Jelly, and Danny Carey was the drummer,” tells Morello. “Maynard sometimes worked with them and lived in this loft where a lot of musicians lived in Los Angeles. Tool actually had their first show in that loft! A couple of the other guys from Rage Against the Machine were at the gig too, when we had just started writing songs. Maynard had been my roommate for a while, and I had grown up with Adam. I’ll be frank. We did not have the highest expectations for what was going to occur at that loft gig and we went kind of as “friend rock” [Laughs]. They were devastatingly awesome from the very first show though. There’s no other way to say it. They were just awesome. It was unbelievable.” Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo is a huge Tool fan, and so does his son. “My little boy loves Tool!,” states Trujillo. “When I take him to school, we’re playing Tool all the time, so I definitely connect with them. There’s a lot of bass in that group, which is nice. They’re a great band for a bass player to listen to. So believe it or not, my son and I are going through a big Tool phase! It includes every record too.” Gojira frontman Joe Duplantier credits Tool for creating his favorite album and getting him addicted to it in his sleep! “’10,000 Days’ is my favorite record, raves the frontman. “The first time I heard it, I didn’t get it. I forced myself to listen to it two times in a row. Then, I fell asleep with the album repeating, and I spent the whole night with the album in my ears. Maybe that’s why I got addicted! I heard it six or seven times in one night. It got to my brain very deeply. Now, I’m addicted [Laughs].” Check out Artist Direct for more testimonials from members of Iron Maiden , Machine Head , Korn + more. British Columbia Metal Shop Wins Initial Trademark Battle Against Metallica

Blackened Recordings Metallica have been diligent over the years when defending their trademark, but one small metal manufacturing company has emerged victorious in retaining their name after an initial challenge from the band. The Burnaby metal shop known as Metallica Manufacturing will continue to operate under their title after a recent court ruling. Owner Bill Lawson told Burnaby Now , “It was a very innocent choosing of such a name from a 12-year-old kid.” Lawson says that the name was chosen in the late ’90s and though the band was around at that point, the Metallica moniker seemed appropriate given their chosen trade as a custom metal shop. According to Lawson, the British Columbia business operated unencumbered for four or five years, but began to receive legal inquiries when they tried to register for a domain name online. After several years of the band’s legal representation trying to stop them from using the name, they filed a trademark application in 2008 seeking to use the moniker in coordination with metal fabrications, welding and machining. Last September, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office ruled that there was no likelihood of confusion between the company and the band, therefore giving Metallica Manufacturing a partial victory by allowing them to continue pursuing their trademark application. “This is not a gloating issue,” said Lawson after the ruling. “We just want to be left alone … We just want to be able to carry on and use the name. The whole city knows us.” It should be noted that Twisted Sister , who have been in the news lately for taking on small mom-and-pop businesses utilizing their name, recently commented on trademark law and not having a decision in who gets targeted. Guitarist Jay Jay French explained, “The fact of the matter is that trademark law doesn’t give me a choice on who and what to defend. The law is very clear: either defend your trademark or lose rights to it.” So while Metallica taking on small businesses over their name may seem like “David vs. Goliath,” should the band choose not to defend their trademark it would open themselves up to potentially allowing everyone access to the brand they’ve taken pride in building. Metallica vs. Pantera – 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Championship Round

2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl Championship Talk about your clash of the titans! The 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl championship is one for the ages with two heavy metal legends — Metallica and Pantera — sending their powerful, hard-hitting tracks against each other to determine which is the best football anthem. On one side, you’ve got Metallica. The metal mavens have made mincemeat out of the competition, besting Volbeat’s ‘A Warrior’s Call’ with 71 percent of the vote, cutting up Papa Roach’s ‘Last Resort’ into pieces with 64 percent of the final tally and then finally staving off some fierce competition from Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘Seize the Day,’ but emerging victorious with 67 percent of the vote. And it’s no wonder Metallica are still around because ‘Seek and Destroy’ is as intense as they come. This amped up rocker about looking for a fight is just the kind of competitive song that you would expect to be a stadium rocker. But this may be Metallica’s toughest battle yet as Pantera’s ‘F—ing Hostile’ is ready to throw down. Pantera narrowly edged Drowning Pool’s ‘Bodies” with 53 percent of the vote in the first round, but this moshpit banger is just getting stronger with each round. ‘F—ing Hostile’ took out Korn’s ‘Freak on a Leash’ with 72 percent of the final tally and the song demolished Slipknot’s ‘Wait and Bleed’ in the semifinals with just shy of 64 percent of the vote. With Phil Anselmo ‘s brutal pent-up aggression oozing all over this track, it’s no wonder the song has advanced and survived. ‘F—ing Hostile’ is just the type of track you need to get amped up for some hard-hitting gridiron action. So there you have it, our final two. Which is the better football anthem — Metallica’s ‘Seek and Destroy’ or Pantera’s ‘F—ing Hostile’? Your votes will decide the 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl Champion. Listen to both tracks below and then vote for your favorite. You can vote once per hour from now through Monday, Feb. 4 at 10AM ET, at which point a champion will be crowned. Pantera vs. Slipknot – 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Semifinals

Loudwire Rock Bowl Semifinals You may need some padding after this 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl semifinal matchup is complete. It’s the circle-pit favorite ‘F—ing Hostile’ from Pantera squaring off the brutality of Slipknot ‘s own slamming anthem ‘Wait and Bleed.’ Pantera eeked out the narrowest of victories against Drowning Pool’s ‘Bodies’ in the first round, taking home 53 percent of the vote, but they had an easier time in the quarterfinals against Korn’s ‘Freak on a Leash,’ earning 72 percent of the final tally. With the full-force guitar work of Dimebag Darrell, Vinnie Paul’s speedy yet powerful beats, Rex Brown’s thumping bass line and Phil Anselmo’s pent-up aggression, this song is as energetic as they come and captures the fighting spirit represented on the football field. And speaking of aggression, Corey Taylor certainly delivers while singing about the hate rising up inside of him. Much like an NFL player psyched up for competition, Slipknot ‘s ‘Wait and Bleed’ comes out of the gate ready to erupt. ‘Wait and Bleed’ easily bested P.O.D.’s ‘Boom’ in round one with 71 percent of the vote, while Slipknot also had a decisive victory in the quarterfinals against Rob Zombie’s ‘Superbeast,’ with 72 percent of the final tally. It’s Pantera vs. Slipknot in a battle to advance to the 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl semifinals and you can hear both songs below.
