There were some battles that were tight, but all of the acts remaining can thank their fans for the support they’ve showed in advancing them to the quarterfinals in the fight to determine football’s best hard rock anthem. Iconic metal bands like Metallica and Pantera will send their songs ‘Seek and Destroy’ and ‘F–ing Hostile’ up against next generation rockers like Papa Roach and Korn with their anthems ‘Last Resort’ and “Freak on a Leash.’ Slipknot and Rob Zombie will do battle with ‘Wait and Bleed’ squaring off against ‘Superbeast,’ while Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold send ‘Indestructible’ and ‘Seize the Day’ into the stadium. Who will survive and advance to the semifinals? That’s up to you. Loudwire Rock Bowl Quarterfinals The quarterfinals of the 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl gets under way with this powerhouse matchup — Metallica ‘s ‘Seek and Destroy’ against Papa Roach ‘s ‘Last Resort.’ Metallica had a rather decisive victory in the first round with ‘Seek and Destroy’ earning 71 percent of the vote over Volbeat’s ‘A Warrior’s Call.’ Their stadium-ready anthem amps up the listener and get them ready to “start up a fight.” What better way to get ready for some gridiron action? Their competition comes from Papa Roach, who had a much more difficult road in advancing to the second round. ‘Last Resort’ earned 53 percent of the vote over Godsmack’s ‘I Stand Alone.’ Jacoby Shaddix & company can move listeners with this hard-rocking cut, and it’s the perfect song for that two-minute drive at the end of the game. Although the real stories are often more inconceivable than the fake ones, wrestler Hulk Hogan has finally given a statement about the rumor that he was once asked by drummer Lars Ulrich to become Metallica ‘s bassist. Early last year, Hogan claimed that he was at one point a serious candidate to play bass for the iconic band. “I used to be a session musician before I was a wrestler,” Hogan states. “I played bass guitar. I was big pals with Lars Ulrich and he asked me if I wanted to play bass with Metallica in their early days but it didn’t work out.” Soon after, during an appearance on the Howard Stern Show, Ulrich claimed to have no recollection of asking Hulk to join the band. “That one, when that showed up two or three months ago, I was scratching my head over that one,” states the drummer. “I don’t know Hulk Hogan, I don’t know enough about him… I’m not a huge wrestling [fan]… I certainly have no recollection of doing anything with quote Hulk Hogan endquote.” Almost a year after Hogan’s initial statement, the wrestling legend cleared the air during an interview with Kerrang! : That has rumor has been turned and twisted and thrown in so many different directions — that I auditioned and that I lied and that I never auditioned and they weren’t interested. The truth is I played music for many years before I ever got into wrestling, and when I heard Metallica was looking for a bass player, I would have quit wrestling like that [snaps fingers] to get into Metallica. When I heard they were looking for a bass player, I got my tapes together from the old band, got a couple of tapes together that Simon Cowell produced with me — Green Jelly, and I did an old Gary Glitter song, ‘Leader Of The Gang’, with Simon, back in the day, before he got his break with all the wrestling music and became a huge monster. But I got all that stuff together to send it to Metallica and never heard a word. So they never responded to me. They either thought I was a joke or they thought it was a joke, and it wasn’t me, or I was no good, but I never heard back from them … I tried — but I never did audition for Metallica. I wish I would have. But the bass player they got was so good. My God! Case closed? 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl You may need to strap on a helmet when you get a load of the songs in the 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl. We’re taking some of the hardest hitting tracks and pairing them off in order to determine the best song to get you amped for a football game. In this first-round matchup, we’re pitting Metallica ‘s classic ‘Seek and Destroy’ against the Danish rockers Volbeat and their recent hit ‘A Warrior’s Call.’ Metallica’s ‘Seek and Destroy’ is a natural choice, with its super-charged riffage, hard-hitting Lars Ulrich drums and a song title that might as well be a motto for most defensive players in the league as they attempt to take out the other team’s offensive weapons. As the song says at its kickoff, “ We’re scanning the scene / In the city tonight / We’re looking for you / To start up a fight .” Volbeat, meanwhile, provide what seems to be an anthem describing most football players’ mentality. ‘A Warrior’s Call’ stands out with its powerful drums and driving guitars gaining momentum right up until the song explodes. The lyrics also bring it home, with the motivational message “ Breaking your record and breaking your bones / Born a warrior with a code / A champion feeding your face with a fist / You will feel all his power! ” leading the way. Nuclear Blast California is the American Mecca for thrash metal. With top thrash innovators such as Metallica , Testament , Autopsy, Exodus , Death Angel and more having risen to fame together in the early ’80s, a very tight-knit brotherhood has been created between these musicians. Despite this bond, Metallica and Testament have never toured together, and during our recent chat with Testament singer Chuck Billy , he told us it’s his “dream” for the two acts to share a bill. Between Metallica and Testament, there are 62 years of thrash history shared among the two acts, with Metallica forming on 1981 and Testament coming together in 1983. Both bands are constantly performing with the world’s biggest thrash acts, such as Metallica headlining numerous ‘Big 4′ shows with Slayer , Megadeth and Anthrax , while Testament toured extensively in 2012 with Anthrax and Death Angel. Testament are even scheduled to headline another iconic tour in 2013 when they hit the road with Overkill . With these simple facts presented, it’s almost unfathomable to believe that Metallica has “never toured or played” with Testament, but according to Billy, it’s 100 percent true. “The band that we’ve always looked up to is Metallica,” reveals Billy. “From day one the songwriting, the aggression of the music, the vibe and what they stood for has always been an iconic goal for us to try and reach. Unfortunately, we’ve never gotten to perform with Metallica. So hopefully one day they look down and say, ‘They’ve come to our shows in the Bay Area, but we’ve never toured with them or played with them before.’ Maybe one day we will get our dream met and we’ll be able to play some shows and share a stage with them. They’ve always been one of those bands we’ve looked up to. I’ve always looked up to James [Hetfield] as a songwriter and a performer.” We can declare with a deep sense of certainty that there is no thrash fanatic out there who would miss a Metallica / Testament tour, so we issue this challenge to Metallica; once you’re finished writing and recording the new album, we call upon you to draft Testament for your next world tour! Elektra Records Metallica fans have been patiently waiting, and today (Jan. 15) the band rewarded them with the news that their highly anticipated 3D concert movie will be titled ‘Metallica Through the Never.’ Plus, the group let it be known that the film will receive a theatrical release on Aug. 9. In a posting on their website, the band revealed that they’ve been working throughout the fall and into early 2013 with director Nimrod Antal and his team of editors to create the movie. They’ve also signed a deal with independent marketing and distribution company Picturehouse to bring it to theaters around the world. The band was impressed with the track record of Picturehouse founder Bob Berney, who had overseen the release of two of the biggest independent films ever — ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ and ‘The Passion of the Christ.’ The movie mogul recently re-entered the picture as the firm’s CEO and his first project in that role will be ‘Metallica Through the Never.’ Drummer Lars Ulrich stated the following on the band’s website: Metallica’s way of doing things is to jump into unexplored creative endeavors with no safety net whatsoever. Putting this movie together for the last couple of years has been a pretty wild ride, and we’ve definitely done our fair share of flying without a net! Bringing Bob and [Picturehouse President] Jeanne [Berney] and the new Picturehouse team in at this point provides us with a much-needed level of security for the distribution of the film. Their spirit of independence and desire to work outside the box is something we can relate to in every way and this makes them both a welcome addition and a natural fit in the Metallica family. Ulrich recently compared the film to Led Zeppelin’s ‘The Song Remains the Same,’ and also gave further details about the movie’s concept.
