Wind-Up Cleveland rock veterans Filter have announced that Wind-up Records will be the new home for their sixth full-length album, tentatively titled ‘Gurney and the Burning Books.’ The album is slated to drop in May, while the disc’s first single will hit the airwaves in March. Filter have released their share of anthems throughout the last two decades, earning their spot as one of ’90s rock’s most definitive bands. For those who remember when MTV actually played music videos, it was a common and welcomed occurrence when ‘Hey Man, Nice Shot,’ ‘Welcome to the Fold’ or ‘Take a Picture’ would pop onto your television screen. Founding member and frontman Richard Patrick will lead with the record’s writing duties alongside guitarist Jonny Radtke and collaborator Marlette. A Perfect Circle / Puscifer drummer Jeff Friedl will also contribute to the new Filter album along with additional drummer Elias Mallin and bassist Phil Buckman. Wind-up Records President Ed Vetri shared his excitement about signing Filter in a new press release. “We’re thrilled to welcome Richard Patrick and Filter into the Wind-up family,” says Vetri. “This is a successful band with an extremely impressive body of work and I’m happy to say that based on the demos I’ve heard, this new album could very well be their best to date. Filter is more committed than ever to delivering great repertoire and bringing these songs to life at their live shows throughout 2013.” Richard Patrick adds, “We’re excited to enter a new phase of our career with Wind-up. They’re expecting great things from us and we plan to deliver.” Stay tuned for more news on Filter’s sixth studio album. Kurt Cobain Filmmaker: Courtney Love Is Not Involved in Upcoming Documentary
Ron Galella Archive, Wire Image, Getty Images Since the news broke of a new documentary chronicling the life of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain , there have been conflicting reports as to whether the legendary musician’s widow Courtney Love will be a part of its creation. Brett Morgen, directior of HBO’s new documentary on the Rolling Stones, ‘Crossfire Hurricane,’ was recruited by Love to oversee the Cobain project, but it seems as if that will be Love’s only contribution to the project. Morgen recently told the New York Post , “Courtney [Love] is the one that brought me into this… We’ve been trying to find the right time to put this film together and the time is now. We are going to do the movie sort of like a third-person autobiography — [as] if Kurt was around and making a film about his life.” This quote led to the assumption that Love would assert creative control over the documentary, but a representative for the Hole frontwoman has asserted otherwise. Morgen has now gone on-record to clear up any misunderstandings concerning Love’s role in the film. “Back in 2007, I had a meeting in L.A. with Courtney Love to discuss my possible involvement in a Kurt Cobain documentary,” he told EW in a statement. “She had seen my film ‘The Kid Stays in the Picture,’ and thought that I had the right vision and passion to bring Kurt’s story to life. Since that time, I have been speaking exclusively with Kurt Cobain’s estate, who have given me their full cooperation in order to make the film.” He continues, “Courtney isn’t currently involved with the project in any capacity. The estate and I will be releasing more information about our plans in the coming weeks. Production on the film will begin in the coming months and we are aiming for a 2014 release.” This news comes shortly after rumors that Courtney Love was planning to create a Nirvana-based musical to Broadway or the big-screen; a claim Love was quick to deny. Stay tuned for more news on the upcoming Kurt Cobain film as news continues to break. [button href=”http://loudwire.com/best-grunge-bands/” title=”Next: 10 Best Grunge Bands” align=”center”]
Slash Explains URL Slashes on ‘Conan’
Conan Colons, forward slashes, backward slashes, dots and coms — writing a URL can be a tricky business. And who better to set the record straight than rock’s very own Slash ? Slash weighed in on the subject during last night’s (Oct. 15) episode of ‘ Conan ‘ during the ‘Fan Corrections’ segment, which finds viewers sending in videos where they point out what they think are mistakes in the show. According to a YouTube user calling himself JRok34, the URL ‘Conan’ provides for ‘Fan Corrections’ submissions — which includes a small photo of Slash’s head where the slash should be — is incorrect, because it should be leaning forward. ( Forward Slash — get it?) For the definitive answer, Conan turned to Slash himself, who taped a brief response from a recording studio wherein he pointed out that because the picture shows him looking ahead, it’s very much a forward Slash — and then he demonstrated the difference between that and a back Slash by turning around and showing his back to the camera. Having made his case, he concluded by adding, “Sorry, JRok34, but you don’t know s— about HTTP addresses.” Hard to argue with that logic, no? Check out the video below to watch Slash kick his knowledge of all things internet.
