Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com In late August, Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix received discouraging news. After experiencing issues with his voice and consulting a doctor, he was advised to undergo surgery due to a node on his vocal cord. The impending surgery caused Papa Roach to drop off of the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival after only a week on the bill, an opportunity the band was hoping to use to showcase the new material from their upcoming disc, ‘The Connection,’ due out next week on Oct. 2. Well, good news: Shaddix tells Loudwire he is already on the path to a complete recovery after the surgery, and should be back on the stage in the very near future. Our phone conversation with Shaddix began with the Papa Roach singer serenading yours truly with his rendition of the classic Run-DMC tune ‘Mary, Mary,’ probably much to the chagrin of his doctor. When asked how his pipes were healing and how he was feeling, Shaddix was very positive about the whole experience. “Recovery is going really good,” Shaddix said. “It was a little tough in the beginning; I couldn’t talk at all so that sucked. It was the longest silence of my life since I was born; I just wanted to talk so bad.” As far as the physical healing, Shaddix said his last few appointments have been very encouraging. “Went to the first doctor’s appointment, all good,” explained Shaddix. “Went to another one yesterday and the doctor said I could start warming up. It was funny because they put a camera down my nose and down my throat to look down there and they couldn’t see which side they operated on because it had healed so well. They had to go back and look at the ‘before’ pictures, so that’s a god sign. It’s healing really well.” So what does the future hold for the singer? “I’m going to start warming up and I’ll be good to go here in the next two weeks. I’ll be full-voiced, buck wild, singing like a maniac,” Shaddix said. So in short, a true return to form. When we asked Shaddix if there would be any long-term effects to his singing voice, he responded, “I don’t think so. I’ll find out exactly how my voice sounds in the next few weeks. Anything is better than what it was, though, because it was f—ing terrible. I’m good.” Check back next week for the rest of our interview with Shaddix. Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Musicians have to get their inspiration from somewhere, and Shinedown singer Brent Smith says he owes a debt of gratitude to the ’70s television series ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ and the singer of the show’s theme song, Waylon Jennings , for putting him on the path to music. Smith recalls in the ‘Beacon Moment’ video series (shown below), “I was about four years old and I had a love for the television show ‘The Dukes of Hazzard.’ The funny thing was that I loved the theme song so much that my grandmother got me a 45 of just the Waylon Jennings song.” Smith says that his love of the song really helped define a passion early on in his life. He recalls, “I would play it just over and over and over and over again, and honestly I knew pretty much from that moment that I wanted to be a singer. It’s funny cause I would tell my parents, ‘I want to do what the man’s doing, like on the song.’ And they were like, ‘Oh, you want to be a guitar player or be in a band?’ and I was like, ‘No, I’m gonna be a singer.’” The vocalist says that from an early age, he knew music was his future. He explains, “It was very profound because the way I looked at it, even at a young age, I don’t feel I was ever desensitized to songs or the beauty of being an artist as far as creating songs and being a songwriter. I started writing songs when I was probably six, at least in my mind I did.” Aside from ‘The Dukes of Hazzard,’ Smith says his dad helped provide his soulful side, turning him onto the music of Otis Redding. The vocalist says that even though he loves rock, you can hear a bit of the Redding influence in his delivery. Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong may have to put aside some of the band’s promotional activities while he enters rehab for substance abuse , but his appearance as a mentor on NBC’s hit music competition ‘ The Voice ‘ won’t be one of them. Deadline reports that the musician, who was recently announced as a mentor for Christina Aguilera ‘s team, will still be part of the upcoming episodes. “We’re taped and all set,” an NBC representative stated about Billie Joe’s time on the program, which was filmed over the summer and will air in the upcoming weeks. It was a rough weekend for the vocalist, who suffered an onstage meltdown in Las Vegas Friday night after noticing the band’s set time was running low. The vocalist stopped a song to go on a tirade that included numerous expletive-filled outbursts and ended with Armstrong smashing his guitar and flipping off those he felt were responsible for the time constraint. By Sunday, the group had offered a statement that Armstrong was entering rehab to seek treatment for substance abuse. They also apologized for Friday’s outburst at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas and clarified that their set had not been cut short by organizers. It appears to be true as the former ESPN anchor and current radio sports talk and NBC football host recently showed his metal tendencies by coming out of a commercial break with Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta ‘s voice blaring to all his listeners. The host got into the music so much that he decided to shout Jasta’s lyrics as they hit the airwaves and debated whether or not he could pursue metal as a side career. “I could be one of those heavy metal guys I think,” explained Patrick. “I just don’t have the energy and I don’t have the hair where you just you’re whipping it. I don’t know if I have the energy to go [with] one of those, what are they, speed [metal]?” The song, for those who don’t recognize it, was penned specifically by the singer with his solo project Jasta for the Dan Patrick Show. It provides the theme music for Patrick “Seton” O’Connor’s ‘Stat of the Day’ segment on the radio program. The host has had a wide array of acts on his show, and metal has been represented over the years. In fact, GWAR ‘s Oderus Urungus turned in one of the more memorable appearances on the show. With Patrick and the recent John Clayton commercial for ESPN featuring him in a Slayer t-shirt, we’re wondering if and when we might see a metal sportscasters band forming.
