Green Day Featured in Two Documentaries Screening at South By Southwest Film Festival

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Those checking out the film festival portion of Austin’s South by Southwest will get plenty of Billie Joe Armstrong on the big screen. The Green Day frontman will appear in two separate movies, with ‘Broadway Idiot’ receiving its premiere during the event. The Doug Hamilton-directed ‘Broadway Idiot’ focuses on Armstrong’s involvement in the ‘American Idiot’ stage production, which actually starred the vocalist on select dates during its run. A trailer for ‘Broadway Idiot’ can be seen below. The other Armstrong-starring flick is ‘ ¡Cuatro! ,’ which Green Day shot while they were recording their recent album trilogy. A highlights special aired on several cable networks in December, with the full film recently screening at the Aspen X Games as part of their film festival. In addition to the two Green Day-related flicks, there are a number of other music acts featured in films screening at South by Southwest. Dave Grohl ‘s ‘ Sound City ‘ will air at the festival, coinciding with the singer’s participation as the music portion of South by Southwest’s keynote speaker. Billboard also reports that ‘Artifact,’ a 30 Seconds to Mars documentary, will air during the film festival. The movie details the band’s battle with their record label and the subsequent recording of their hit album, ‘This Is War.’ The movie was directed by Bartholomew Cubbins (aka singer Jared Leto). The festival will also feature movies centered on Bikini Kill singer Kathleen Hanna (‘The Punk Singer’) and a Snoop Dogg movie following his spirituality called ‘Reincarnated.’ Watch the ‘Broadway Idiot’ Trailer [button href=”http://loudwire.com/dave-grohl-keynote-speaker-2013-south-by-southwest-conference/” title=”Next: Dave Grohl Named 2013 South by Southwest Keynote Speaker” align=”center”]

Dave Grohl Rocks With Krist Novoselic, Corey Taylor + More at L.A. ‘Sound City’ Show

Kevin Winter, Getty Images Dave Grohl had perhaps the biggest and most impressive celebration for his ‘ Sound City ‘ film to date, with one rocker after another lining up to take the stage as part of his Sound City Players performance at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles Thursday night (Jan. 31). The gig followed a red-carpet premiere of the Grohl-directed documentary. We were lucky enough to attend the incredible concert, during which the one constant throughout the evening was Grohl, who performed on every single song, whether it be on drums, guitar or bass. The ‘Sound City’ mastermind started the evening on bass while his Queens of the Stone Age cohort Alain Johannes led the crowd through a rocking set that included the Queens album track ‘Hangin’ Tree’ as well as the ‘Sound City’ contribution ‘A Trick With No Sleeve.’ Masters of Reality’s Chris Goss was next, but his set was bolstered with some power drumming from Rage Against the Machine ‘s Brad Wilk. The hard rocking performance featured the infectious beat of ‘She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)’ and the moody ‘Sound City’ soundtrack song ‘Time Slowing Down.’ Grohl stuck around on drums for a brief set featuring Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Peter Hayes and Robert Levon Been. The performance included the ‘Sound City’ cut ‘Heaven and Hell’ as well as a sped-up, jammed out ‘Whatever Happened to My Rock and Roll.’ While the early performances were enjoyable, the energy level seemed to pick up with the introduction of Fear frontman Lee Ving and his “one-two-three-four” openings for every song. Ving got the amped up crowd rocking to the sing-along ‘I Love Living in the City’ and ‘Beef Bologna.’ There were smiles all around as Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear in particular got to exercise their hardcore roots and Hawkins was getting in some rapid-fire drumming. Arguably the rocking highlight of the night came next with Slipknot  /  Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor leading an inspired Cheap Trick set featuring that band’s own Rick Nielsen on guitar and a guest appearance by Nirvana ‘s Krist Novoselic on bass. Taylor whipped the crowd into a frenzy with ‘Hello There,’ making sure the “ladies and gentlemen” of the audience were “ready to rock.” For the first time during the evening, there was audible singing from the crowd on such favorites as ‘Ain’t That a Shame’ and ‘Surrender.’ During the latter track, one lucky audience member went home with a some vinyl as Nielsen tossed an old record into the crowd to coincide with one of the lyrics. Taylor also received a warm response for the recently debuted ‘ From Can to Can’t ‘ from the ‘Sound City’ soundtrack. The most levity of the evening came with Rick Springfield’s set, with the rocker visibly having a good time playing off drummer Taylor Hawkins , tossing his guitar in the air, and at one point getting a wry smile after missing a mark in ‘Love Is Alright Tonight.’ Dave Grohl joked around with Springfield throughout the set, offering the most stage banter of the evening. At one point he congratulated Springfield after the first three notes of ‘Jessie’s Girl’ rang out to loud cheers. Grohl laughingly joked that Springfield had truly made it by penning a song that everyone knew after hearing one second. Springfield also brought some good time rocking to the night with ‘I’ve Done Everything for You’ and ‘Love Somebody’ during his performance. For guitar lovers, former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman  John Fogerty ‘s performance was a pure treat. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer expressed his joy at taking part and said that all of the people in the film had one thing in common — their love for Grohl. Fogerty’s performance consisted of such well known favorites as ‘Travelin’ Band,’ ‘Born on the Bayou,’ ‘Centerfield,’ ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Bad Moon Rising’ and the full lineup appeared to be most in sync of any performance during the evening. But perhaps the biggest surprise in the set was the wicked guitar work laid down by Fogerty during the CCR track ‘Keep on Chooglin’,’ with much of the band laying back in awe before both Grohl and Chris Shiflett got in a full-on synchronized jam with Fogerty. Fully enjoying the moment, the rock vet threw his arm around Shiflett’s head and later hugged Grohl. Fogerty’s set ended with a duet with Grohl on the classic ‘Fortunate Son.’ Already clocking in at three-plus hours, the ‘Sound City Players’ concert rounded out with a huge response for Stevie Nicks . She returned the audience affection with a solid yet brief set that opened with ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’ and ‘Dreams,’ before taking things down with an intimate version of ‘Landslide’ with only Grohl on guitar and some brief accompaniment from Rami Jaffe on accordion and Jessy Greene on violin. Nicks and the entire Foo Fighters lineup finished out the night with a full-on jam of the Fleetwood Mac classic ‘Gold Dust Woman.’ In addition to all the great performances, the night also featured highlights from the ‘Sound City’ documentary which brought all the musicians together in the first place. The film is currently available for purchase as a download here and can be seen in select theaters across the U.S. [button href=”http://loudwire.com/dave-grohl-hopes-to-perform-sound-city-shows-around-the-world/” title=”Next: Dave Grohl Hopes to Bring ‘Sound City Players’ Around the World” align=”center”] Dave Grohl and Stevie Nicks at Sound City Players Concert in L.A. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder to Contribute Song to Christian Bale Film ‘Out of the Furnace’

Samir Hussein, Getty Images While we wait on new Pearl Jam music, frontman Eddie Vedder has found another creative outlet through the big screen. The vocalist, who has contributed music both as a solo artist and with his band to a number of films, is reportedly working on a song for the upcoming Christian Bale film ‘Out of the Furnace.’ The  Los Angeles Times reports that Vedder is writing and recording the solo track for the movie that’s expected to arrive in theaters later this year. The paper cited a source close to the production as stating that it’s likely a number of other Vedder tracks may also be used for the movie. The film, which stars Bale, Woody Harrelson and Casey Affleck, centers on two brothers from a working class Pennsylvania town that get caught up in a web of violent crimes. Vedder’s songs have been featured in the movies ‘Dead Man Walking’ and ‘Eat Pray Love,’ while the singer recorded an entire soundtrack for the film ‘Into the Wild.’ Earlier this year, Vedder stated that Pearl Jam were “halfway” toward finishing their next album, but the band’s members have repeatedly stated that they’re taking their time on the disc and enjoying a break until everyone feels ready to resume work. Regardless of the album progress, the band has begun lining up some new shows for this summer, including a date at Chicago’s Wrigley Field . Green Day to Screen ‘¡Quatro!’ Documentary at 2013 Aspen X Games

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day fans got their first taste of the band’s ‘¡Quatro!’ documentary late last year when VH1, MTV2 and Palladia aired a highlights special featuring clips from the film. Now fans will get to see ‘¡Quatro!’ in its entirety when it screens at the upcoming X Games competition being held in Aspen Jan. 26. In addition to the various sports, the X Games has launched their own film showcase in recent years to provide those attending with other forms of entertainment and Green Day’s ‘¡Quatro!’ will be one of the featured movies at the Wheeler Opera House. The movie itself documents the massive undertaking that was the completion of Green Day’s album trilogy. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong says in the trailer for the film, “This is the first time in 20 years that we are actually inviting people into the process. This is not a fully thought out thing yet,” to which an unseen band members says off screen, “This is like sending the baby down to the corner to buy cigarettes.” The timing was right for a project like this because it showed the band at their most vulnerable. As Armstrong recalls, “We were so used to presenting ourselves before, but this time we had nothing. It was back to that ‘prove it to me’ [attitude].” In coordination with the screening, the band will also be answering questions. Fans may submit their queries for the group at the X Games Facebook page here . Biopic on Late AC/DC Vocalist Bon Scott Casts Lead Actor + Begins Pre-Production

Warner Brothers / Publicity Photo He was one of the more entertaining characters in rock music and now the short life and times of late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott will be featured on the big screen. After spending the last year getting the cast and crew lined up, pre-production has begun on the biopic. According to Bravewords.com , filmmaker J.R. Getches shot the first-ever dramatic portrayal of the musician on Jan. 14, with actor-singer Rob Liotti handling the role of Scott. The director says, “The story of Bon Scott is a classical tragedy. He travelled across the world, made his mark and then died too young. He was a misfit who found his place in rock music and became immortal pursuing his dream. This is a story worth telling.” While Liotti has been cast in the lead role, the remaining actors for the film have not been revealed. However, it is known that Malcolm and Angus Young, Mark Evans, Phil Rudd and Margaret “Silver” Smith are among the roles that have been cast. Liotti reportedly shed 40 pounds in order to prepare to play Scott. At present, High Voltage Productions Pty. are currently seeking an independent production house to help them complete their vision, but they have stated that the film’s trailer will help serve in fundraising and give a visual perpetuity to investors and the public.
