Avenged Sevenfold vs. Shinedown – 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Round 1

Photos by Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com It’s an inspirational message versus an in-your-face proclamation in this 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl matchup. This first round pairing sees Avenged Sevenfold attempting to ‘Seize the Day’ against Shinedown , who appear ready to ‘Devour’ their new foes. Though a little on the softer side than what we usually get from Avenged Sevenfold, ‘Seize the Day’ is no less powerful in message. The inspirational track warns the listener to “ Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost, ” a sentiment that isn’t lost on today’s NFL player. With such a shortened season as compared to other sports, it’s important to make every moment count and Avenged Sevenfold definitely connect with a football theme in the song. Shinedown’s ‘Devour,’ meanwhile, has that great opening build just waiting to explode. As Brent Smith sings about taking it and taking it and taking it over and over again, it’s no wonder that by the time we get to the chorus he’s ready to devour, proclaiming, “It’s your final hour.” If that doesn’t speak to the mentality and pressure of an NFL player, what does? So there you have it — Avenged Sevenfold versus Shinedown. Which band advances? Your vote will decide. Listen to both tracks below, then vote in the poll provided. Metallica vs. Volbeat – 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Round 1

2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl You may need to strap on a helmet when you get a load of the songs in the 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl. We’re taking some of the hardest hitting tracks and pairing them off in order to determine the best song to get you amped for a football game. In this first-round matchup, we’re pitting Metallica ‘s classic ‘Seek and Destroy’ against the Danish rockers Volbeat and their recent hit ‘A Warrior’s Call.’ Metallica’s ‘Seek and Destroy’ is a natural choice, with its super-charged riffage, hard-hitting Lars Ulrich drums and a song title that might as well be a motto for most defensive players in the league as they attempt to take out the other team’s offensive weapons. As the song says at its kickoff, “ We’re scanning the scene / In the city tonight / We’re looking for you / To start up a fight .” Volbeat, meanwhile, provide what seems to be an anthem describing most football players’ mentality. ‘A Warrior’s Call’ stands out with its powerful drums and driving guitars gaining momentum right up until the song explodes. The lyrics also bring it home, with the motivational message “ Breaking your record and breaking your bones / Born a warrior with a code / A champion feeding your face with a fist / You will feel all his power! ” leading the way. The stage is set and now it’s your turn to tell us who advances. Check out each of the tracks below and vote for your favorite in the poll. Love and Death, ‘Between Here & Lost’ – Album Review

Tooth & Nail Many people may know Brian ‘Head’ Welch as the former guitarist of Korn , but he takes on the role of frontman in his new band Love and Death , who have just unleashed their debut album ‘Between Here & Lost.’ “Wake up sleepy / Wide Awake” are the first words that Welch belts out to get the blood pumping in the first track ‘The Abandoning.’ With trippy guitar riffs and an incredible balance of aggression and beautiful harmony, this tune is just the start of the roller-coaster ride that is ‘Between Here & Lost.’ When one thinks of Devo’s ‘Whip It,’ a heavy cover of the song might not come to mind, but Welch and his band do an amazing job of turning this into a heavy hitting yet catchy rendition that is bound to be a guilty pleasure on this record. Welch shows off his vocal range with the softer song ‘By the Way,’ and then mixes groove and melody with heavy screams in tracks such as ‘Watching The Bottom,’ ‘Meltdown’ and ‘Fading Away.’ One of the strongest songs on the album is ‘Chemicals,’ which is on the more melodic side and is very catchy with blistering riffs. ‘Paralyzed’ kicks off with an eerie beginning and even though the track has verses with soft vocals, it blows up at the two and a half minute mark as Welch spits out,  “Death before I give dishonor / Death before I disobey.” ‘My Disaster’ starts with very forceful guitar riffs that almost sound off like an alarm, not to mention Welch’s raspy vocals, as he sings the chorus,  “Feeling everything / Crashing down on me / Lost and so afraid / It’s my disaster / Losing everything / Giving all of me / I feel so betrayed / In my disaster.” ‘I W8 4 U’ is one of the heaviest and best tracks on the record. For Today’s Mattie Montgomery’s is the guest vocalist on this song, giving it such dynamic power with the chorus,  “I wait for you / Always will, always do / I wait for you / Burning, bleeding, dying / But I wait for you.” ‘Between Here & Lost’ ends with ‘Bruises,’ a track with incredible depth. With a piano melody and whispering vocals, the song spirals out and amps up with crashing cymbals and a whole lot of energy. Brian ‘Head’ Welch has grown into a dynamic frontman and ‘Between Here & Lost’ is an album that puts all emotions on the table and does so with a unique and hard hitting sound. ? Green Day to Screen ‘¡Quatro!’ Documentary at 2013 Aspen X Games

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day fans got their first taste of the band’s ‘¡Quatro!’ documentary late last year when VH1, MTV2 and Palladia aired a highlights special featuring clips from the film. Now fans will get to see ‘¡Quatro!’ in its entirety when it screens at the upcoming X Games competition being held in Aspen Jan. 26. In addition to the various sports, the X Games has launched their own film showcase in recent years to provide those attending with other forms of entertainment and Green Day’s ‘¡Quatro!’ will be one of the featured movies at the Wheeler Opera House. The movie itself documents the massive undertaking that was the completion of Green Day’s album trilogy. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong says in the trailer for the film, “This is the first time in 20 years that we are actually inviting people into the process. This is not a fully thought out thing yet,” to which an unseen band members says off screen, “This is like sending the baby down to the corner to buy cigarettes.” The timing was right for a project like this because it showed the band at their most vulnerable. As Armstrong recalls, “We were so used to presenting ourselves before, but this time we had nothing. It was back to that ‘prove it to me’ [attitude].” In coordination with the screening, the band will also be answering questions. Fans may submit their queries for the group at the X Games Facebook page here . Dave Mustaine-Designed Jackson Y2KV Guitar Auctioned for $11K

eBay There are definitely some avid Dave Mustaine fans out there and one of them just shelled out just over $11,000 to own an ultra rare prototype Jackson Y2KV guitar that was specifically created for the Megadeth leader. Mustaine signed off on the design and it was delivered to him on Dec. 23, 1998. The guitarist was proud enough of the instrument to pose with it on the cover of Guitar magazine in 1999. The magazine photo, along with the original guitar order form and snapshots of the instrument, can be viewed at the eBay auction site here . This was the first guitar with the final 3+3 Y2KV head and was branded with the Jackson logo on the headstock. It features dot inlays, a rosewood fingerboard, alternate knobs and a blade switch. While the body shape wasn’t quite finalized, this was the first approved prototype by Mustaine, used as a reference for the final prototype. The guitar comes with Seymour Duncan JB-TB bridge and JB SH-4 neck pickups and well as a Tune-o-Matic string through body bridge and Schaller tuners. The Megadeth frontman designed the guitar as his vision of a less-aggressive, retro-looking flying V, which was a bit of a contrast to his usual King V that he was playing at the time. The guitar was primarily used during the support of the ‘Risk’ and ‘The World Needs a Hero’ records. The winning bidder, who submitted an $11,300 bid, will also receive a signed certificate of authenticity in return for their payment. Best Kid Rock Song – Readers Poll

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Kid Rock has enjoyed a fruitful career that’s seen him enjoy success not only as a rock act, but also stepping into the worlds of hip-hop, country and pop just as easily. There’s no disagreeing that it’s hard to pin down the musician to just one genre, but some of his best songs have been rocking numbers. In this Loudwire Readers Poll, we’re asking you to determine Kid Rock’s best song. His ‘Devil Without a Cause’ album seems like a good place to start, with ‘I Am the Bullgod’ giving him some of his first radio play. That followed with a string of hits that included ‘Bawitdaba,’ ‘Cowboy’ and the rock ballad, ‘Only God Knows Why.’ After breaking big, the singer issued ‘The History of Rock’ detailing some of his earlier work and ‘American Bad Ass’ proved to be the disc’s breakout hit. Kid Rock’s ‘Cocky’ album led off with the single ‘Forever,’ followed by ‘Lonely Road of Faith’ and the crossover duet with Sheryl Crow on ‘Picture.’ The singer’s self-titled set spawned the hit song ‘Jackson, Mississippi,’ and Rock enjoyed a commercial rebound with the ‘Rock N Roll Jesus’ album, which gave us the hard-hitting ‘So Hott’ and the Lynyrd Skynyrd -influenced ‘All Summer Long,’ as well as ‘Amen.’ Rock went a little more message-oriented for the title track of the ‘Born Free’ album. That disc also spawned the college football theme song, ‘God Bless Saturday.’ And finally, the musician issued his ‘Rebel Soul’ album late last year, with ‘Let’s Ride’ being the first track to enjoy some airplay. So there you have it — 15 of Kid Rock’s most popular to choose from. Tell us which track is Kid Rock’s best song in the Loudwire Readers Poll below.
