Surely tracks such as ‘F—ing Hostile’ and ‘Mouth for War’ have inspired many fists to bust through walls, along with faces, so Boxing Insider welcomed Anselmo for an exclusive interview, but here’s the catch: Philip Anselmo was brought in to conduct an interview with yet another musician and boxing fan … rapper 50 Cent. In an hilarious piece of truth, Anselmo admitted to have no effing clue who 50 Cent was, but penned kind words about the rapper. “Call me morbid, call me pale, call me a victim of pugilistic dementia, but I must say, speaking to this man was an interesting experience,” writes Anselmo. “I was beyond impressed with his smarts, his sense of humor, his accomplishments and his future plans.” Although not one to follow the hip-hop game, Anselmo’s interviewing skills were spot-on: Anselmo : “Do you see any parallels between music and boxing on a business level?” 50 Cent : “Well yes. In the past the majority of the record companies were run continuously. Artists would come up and be really exciting at certain points and eventually go through that cycle of entertainment. Then, they (record companies) built entertainment to destroy them (the artists) for the sake of entertainment. And as you go up, and keep going up in an artist’s career, there’s no place to go but down shortly thereafter. And if you look at some of those older artists that are so talented, then ask yourself, ‘What happened to them?’ or ‘Why aren’t they still recording?’ or ‘Why aren’t they still exciting to the general public?’, it’s because the public follows that system. The shadow of doubt is cast over artists and music culture at different points. You have to be independent in order to work things out through that shadow. Because it’s this system that decides who is relevant, and companies have to see if they’re gonna continue to market and promote the actual projects anymore. And it’s the same with fighters; they’ll grow up and they’ll see some excitement around them and they’re having their moment, but in boxing if there is no opponent, the general public will make one for you. If a guy happens to be a shining star in his weight class, there’ll be another fighter that may have a great performance in the same division, so that guy will be perceived as the guy that can beat the shining star. And the public and press will make the challenger as relevant as you, because the star fighter needs to fight! November 30th, 2012 Metalkult Mike Coppola / David Becker, Getty Images By now, most people are familiar with the Bon Jovi classic ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’ and could sing it word for word if put on the spot, but Duff McKagan has a question that’s long been debated amongst his musician friends that pertains to the lyric “ I’ve seen a million faces and I’ve rocked them all .” The bassist ponders if this was truly a fact or just taking poetic license for a great lyric. In his latest Seattle Weekly article, the musician breaks down the argument he’s had with several musicians over the years. But before you think McKagan’s lost his mind, he does admit, “A musician has plenty of time to ponder things — both big and small — when they’re on the road. You have to hope for a good sense of shared humor when traveling and living together in cramped confines, something I call the tour bubble. If you can’t make light of some of the asinine situations you meet on the road, you are gonna be toast.” One of those “situations” was the ongoing Bon Jovi debate, where McKagan states that being on the road does expose you to a lot of people, but do you technically “rock” them all? McKagan says no. The bassist states, “I have no doubt that Bon Jovi had played to a million people by the time ‘Dead or Alive’ was released on ‘Slippery When Wet’ in 1986. But did they rock them all? Couldn’t it be that some dudes brought their girlfriends to the show and weren’t necessarily into the music of Bon Jovi? What about some parents? Or, maybe some people just didn’t get rocked? Hey, it’s happened to me. I’ve gone to gigs properly prepared to get rocked and it just didn’t happen for me.” He goes on to add, “How could they even be sure? They had played a bunch of festivals, and you KNOW that not everyone there was attending to come see their band. They had probably converted some of these people into new fans, but rocking them all would be a huge overstatement.” McKagan himself, who has enjoyed a lengthy career with Guns N’ Roses , Velvet Revolver and Loaded , among other projects, says, “In my whole career, I have certainly played to a ton of faces (I’ll let you do the math), but, hell, I was hammered for a couple of those years, and probably wasn’t concentrating on faces at all. Besides, how can you see all of the faces that you play to, hammered or not?! Lights are in your eyes! It’s dark! You have shades on! When you headline a smaller venue, with say 850 people, you can actually see all of the faces. But even if all of those people are there to see your band, and have spent their hard-earned money to come and spend the evening with you, isn’t it possible a few of those people were disappointed? November 26th, 2012 Metalkult Gary Livingston, Getty Images Four years have passed since Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a car accident which left him in a coma. Having only been in a partially conscious state since Feb. 2012, Chi is now able to spend his life out of a hospital despite many return trips due to various infections. In a long post by Chi’s mother, she shares the latest on Chi’s recovery, including a close call concerning oxygen deprivation. Chi Cheng has spent an unfortunate amount of time confined to a hospital bed since the accident, and his family and friends have been fighting to keep him out since his latest release. The bassist is currently recovering in a rented house and is constantly tended to by family and various assistants. Unable to speak although he can move his legs on command, Chi Cheng is on a slow but hopefull path of recovery, with Cheng’s family even considering stem cell therapy to aid the bassist. Chi’s brother Ming tells Revolver, “Once his health gets a little better, we’ll start looking into other options…but they don’t even do it (stem cell therapy) in the U.S. yet. It’s a miracle he’s still with us. He’s alive and kicking and he’s fighting, and I think there’s a reason for it. I’m hoping there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for Chi.” Chi’s mother wanted to let the musician to recover in his childhood home, but sadly, Chi’s father passed away in April, leading to legal complications forcing the Cheng family to sell the home. Here’s the newest update on the condition of Chi Cheng in this latest post from oneloveforchi.com : Hello dear family, Hope your holiday was spent with those you love and was happy. Ours was quiet. Mae, Chris and the kids went to Chris’s family’s for dinner Chi and I were here listening to some tunes and catching up on a few things. Now the Christmas Season is here and the insanity that is shopping. Mae tried to get to the store with Chris last night, took one look at the crowds and said “I’m gonna walk home.” They had gone in to get a really good sale on a TV for the new house and when they fought their way back to that section of the store, it was closed. The TV’s were there and the sale was on but they wouldn’t let anyone in that part of the store. (Yes Sal, it WAS Walmart). So, we have gotten into a routine in the house we are renting. Chi is getting much better care at home and has wonderful assistants (full time for now) as Mae gave birth to a baby boy last month. She still does hours of hands on helping the helpers, as does Chris, but we have someone come nights for now so everyone else gets sleep at night. We had hoped to be able to move Chi into the house that all the kids grew up in. He would have been in the main house with Mae and her family and I would have been in the guest house in back. The yard is so great there with bamboo all ofer and oak and fruit trees and bird songs. Sadly Chi’s Dad passed away at the end of April and things got really complicated legally. I thought it best to just rent a place for he and I when he got back from New Jersey and we ended up having to sell the family home. Now it is sold, Mae and all moved in here and we looked for a house big enough for all of us to live in with more room. We did buy one at a very good price and are having it painted and re-carpeted now. It is not far away and is in a better location. So…one more move and we should be able to settle in. We are so happy at the thought of not moving again! In the new house we will finally put some bookcases up for Chi’s books around him with a few of his own things on the wall. I can’t wait! We will even get a dining room table! So about Chi. He was home for a day when he got back from New Jersey and had to go to the emergency room. He spent (6?weeks) in icu, ccu, icu getting one infection after another. I didn’t think that we would see him get back home. It was scary! I think that is when Gina put out the prayer request 1. for the prayer and 2.ya’ll deserved to know it was critical. When he finally got one blood test that was clear of infection they sent him home. I took pictures of the medic van coming up the road and the 2 gals bringing him in. They wheeled him in the house with their portable oxygen still on him and when we put the finger monitor on him he was hardly getting any oxygen at all to his arms legs etc. The girls said that they couldn’t leave him and went outside to call a fully equipped ambulance. Mae and I decided NO more hospitals and went crazy on poor Chi. I was trying to shake and lift him and he wouldn’t wake or move. Mae grabbed a towel and held it tight over his mouth so that he would have to breathe through his nose (where the oxygen was going in). After a bit his eyes opened wide and he looked at Mae like “REALLY!! You’re gonna snuff me??” She told him to breathe through his nose and he did. His oxygen when the girls came back in the house was a nice (98? or 99?). Something high and he was wide awake. They were baffled but cancelled the ambulance and put him in his bed.It is hard and hard for him but we have decided to deal with things at home. Hospitals are too germy! The last time the Dr recommended taking him in and we told him no, he came out the next day and said that it was the right decision. Again now he is starting into pneumonia in both lungs but we caught it early and he is on day 2 of antibiotics. His Dr and the nurse that come to the house are wonderful and Mae doesn’t miss a thing. She checks him constantly and I never sleep well at night so I peek in on him at night too. All and all, he seems intent on staying around awhile longer. Since you all have been such a huge part of making that possible, we have so much gratitude for your support and prayers! I know this has been said before but again, I feel like you are all our family! Some families don’t get this sort of kindness from their blood relatives. The love and compassion that you give Chi and us makes our world like such a better place. I will post or Gina will post (because she will call every day to check on how he is when he is sick) to let you know when he is well again. I am going to try to send Gina some pictures to post also as we have another addition to Chi’s team. This cat appeared and has adopted me and Dai. Kid Rock to Re-Record ‘Devil Without a Cause’ Album, Premieres ‘Let’s Ride’ Video
November 24th, 2012 Metalkult YouTube “Control” is a key word in the music industry these days, and Kid Rock is the latest musician to make sure he’s got a handle on his past hits by re-recording them for future usage. Acts like Squeeze, Def Leppard , and Electric Light Orchestra have re-recorded past favorites in recent years to maintain control over their songs, and Rock is following suit with the music from his breakout album, ‘Devil Without a Cause.’ The musician is planning to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the album in Aug. 2013, and he tells Billboard that having ownership over the master recordings played a key — but not the only — role in the decision. Rock says it also gives him the ability to add to what fans remember from the record as well. He explains, “Some of [the songs] will be exactly like they were an some of them will have the sensibilities of what we’ve learned playing those songs live for 15 years. I’m not going to say they’re going to be better than the originals. That’s tough to top. But I think there’s something special about them that people will dig, whether it’s ‘Bawitdaba,’ ‘Cowboy,’ ‘Only God Know Why,’ ‘…Bullgod,’ ‘Welcome 2 the Party,’ … We’ve twisted them up so much to where it’s very interesting, very cool.” Rock says that one song that will definitely have an updated version is ‘Wasting Time,’ and he adds, “I think we’ll have a monster single with the way we’re doing ‘Wasting Time’ now, without any of the samples and stuff. I think that could be a really big song. It’s just really cool.” The singer also stated that a tour built around the ‘Devil Without a Cause’ album could be in the works as well, but nothing is set as of yet. In addition to re-recording ‘Devil Without a Cause,’ Rock says he may change things up for his next album, revealing that he would open the process to outside writers. He explained, “Right now I’m thinking I might do a record like I’ve never done. I might actually go get song submissions and do four or five country tunes, like country rockers, just get a Nashville producer for those. Then I’m thinking about getting some of my buddies in the hip-hop business to produce four, five tracks of that, getting my old school buddies like Reverend Run, D-Nice, to write rhymes for me. I would not write anything on the record but just do this half-and-half record, country and hip-hop.” Meanwhile, Rock has a new album to support. ‘ Rebel Soul ‘ just arrived in stores, and the musician is promoting the new single, ‘Let’s Ride.’ The video for the track just surfaced online, and can be seen below. The Stone Temple Pilots singer recently announced that he’s now engaged to girlfriend Jamie Wachtel. The couple have been dating for about a year, and the upcoming nuptials will mark Weiland’s third marriage. Weiland gushed to Rolling Stone about his special lady, saying, “She’s the greatest thing that’s happened to me in a long, long time.” He continued to share his feelings about her, explaining, “She is incredibly beautiful in every aspect of the word. Lovely, smart, passionate.” The couple first met on a video shoot for Weiland’s Christmas album released last winter, ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.’ Wachtel was working on set as a photographer and the two hit it off almost instantaneously as Wachtel helped calm Weiland’s nerves during the shoot with a little bit of humor. “I was leaning against this fireplace, and she’s like, ‘You might want to tuck in your belly a little bit,’” Weiland recalled. “It was around the holidays – it was after Thanksgiving, and you know how that tends to be. I was kind of caught off guard, and I started laughing and she started laughing. And I don’t know . . . something magical happened.” Weiland admits that he had pretty much given up on love before meeting Wachtel. “I had fallen in love a couple times in my life and then for a long time, I’ve been very disappointed and to the point where I’ve been resolved to the fact that possibly it would never happen again and almost accepted that it would be OK,” confessed Weiland. “And then I met her.” The two are planning a spring wedding, but before that Weiland has a handful of solo dates in late November, including stops in Pa., N.Y. and N.J. November 17th, 2012 Metalkult Rick Diamond, Getty Images Kid Rock will be in action Sunday (Nov. 18) as he performs at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship race and will be a major part of the coverage on ESPN. The vocalist will be part of the pre-race festivities, playing a live set that includes the race-appropriate single ‘Let’s Ride’ along with three other tracks. In addition, Rock will serve as the celebrity pace car driver at the Homestead-Miami Raceway. The pre-race coverage will begin at 1:30PM ET. After all of the pre-race fun, Rock will head into the booth where he’ll answer questions during the first extended caution. ESPN, who are broadcasting the race beginning at 3:00PM ET, will also show the musician some love by playing his music during the telecast as well. Rock has had a strong presence in the world of NASCAR as his music has been part of telecasts throughout the “Chase for the Sprint Cup” season. Homestead-Miami track president Matthew Becherer stated, “The addition of Kid Rock rounds out a stellar lineup of entertainment for Ford Championship Weekend. His music is pure Americana and will be the perfect way to transition to 267 laps of championship racing.” Rock’s new album, ‘ Rebel Soul ,’ arrives in stores this week. The musician will also be seen this Thursday performing at halftime of the Detroit Lions’ Thanksgiving Day game. November 16th, 2012 Metalkult Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Having surgery for a hernia is a painful process, and Machine Head ‘s Robb Flynn can attest to that. The rocker, who had emergency surgery earlier this week, has been documenting the process and sharing his recovery with fans via a video diary. The first installment showed Flynn coming out of the surgery successfully and feeling somewhat alright due in part to the drugs that were killing the pain he was experiencing. The second installment (watch below) finds Flynn a little bit worse for wear. In the new diary, we see a barely mobile Flynn struggling to stand up straight, and revealing, “I guess I was on a lot of pain meds when I left the hospital, because they’ve all worn off now. I’m really — it’s brutal.” Midway through the clip, the singer has had a difficult night trying to sleep and reveals that he couldn’t lift his left leg without excruciating pain. Even at his weakest, the rocker still kept his sense of humor, sharing, “I feel like I’ve been dry humping for a week with a girl who ain’t putting out.” Since this happened while the band was on tour, Flynn was left to wait out his recovery at a local hotel rather than flying home, and the musician admits that even though he was scheduled to fly that day, it likely wasn’t going to happen. After a bit of a time jump, the rocker leaves his room to show that the place where he was staying had a water park right outside. By the end of the video, Flynn seems noticeably better and admits that being able to step outside and take in what’s going on around him has lifted his spirits. The singer will continue his recovery and has hopes of Machine Head rejoining the tour with Dethklok that the band had started before the need for surgery occurred. However, it’s too early to establish a timetable for that happening as of yet.
