Samir Hussein, Getty Images These days, it seems as if you haven’t truly arrived until you’ve been awarded your very own SiriusXM show — so congratulations to Pearl Jam ‘s Eddie Vedder , who will kick off his brand new satellite radio series tomorrow (Dec. 5). Descriptively dubbed ‘The Eddie Vedder Radio Show,’ Vedder’s new program will air on SiriusXM’s Pearl Jam Radio channel, and is being presented in what the network is calling a “limited run.” According to a press release, episodes will find Vedder spinning “many of his all-time favorite songs, from early punk rock influences to unreleased material from his personal archives.” “Eddie has been the voice of a generation and a voice with a conscience and we are happy to have him take up residence here to do his own show,” said SiriusXM president and COO in a prepared announcement. “Eddie’s record collection could tell some stories all by itself, let alone with Eddie at the helm; we know our listeners will enjoy hearing this one.” The report comes amid a flurry of Pearl Jam news, including word that the band is deep into preparations for its next album, the follow-up to 2009′s ‘Backspacer’ although according to bassist Jeff Ament , there aren’t any concrete plans for 2013. While they take their time working on new material, it’s nice to know Vedder will be using his spare time to keep entertaining the fans. No Comments »Machine Head Guitarist Phil Demmel Reveals Writing Plans for Band’s Next Album
November 30th, 2012 Metalkult Gareth Cattermole, Getty Images Machine Head fans worldwide we certainly happy to hear that frontman Robb Flynn made it through his emergency hernia surgery with just a bad-ass scar, allowing Flynn to get back on the road for their current tour with Dethklok, All That Remains and The Black Dahlia Murder. Adding to the list of good news, Machine Head are planning to start writing their next album once the tour comes to an end. Guitarist Phil Demmel was recently interviewed by thenervousbreakdown.com , where he shared some details about the follow-up to Machine Head’s 2011 album, ‘Unto the Locust.’ “After this tour, we want to get in and start writing,” begins Demmel. “We’ve got a couple of things for next year, but for the most part we want to get in and hopefully start recording before the end of the year next year. Have we thought about directions or any of that? It hasn’t really been agreed upon yet. I think we’re just going to write like we have been.” He adds, “Our formula has been to just come up with something and see what happens. Nothing contrived, you know? That’s how [current hit] ‘Darkness Within’ happened, and that’s how a lot of the stuff on the last album happened, so we’ll just see how we progress. Robb took classical lessons before the last record, so I think it’s just going to be an amalgamation of everything we’ve learned so far. We keep evolving, and it’s not going to be ‘Blackening II’ and it’s not going to be ‘Unto the Locust II.’ I think it’s going to be our strongest record.” Demmel also shared his personal songwriting tricks. “I have a little recorder and I mouth riffs into it. Sitting around watching football and just noodling and recording little harmonies come up, and having them come together with these guys is an amazing process. When you write from the heart, it’s pure and it’s genuine and that’s how we’re going to do it. November 26th, 2012 Metalkult Jason Merritt / Scott Harrison, Getty Images Guns N’ Roses just completed their ‘Appetite for Democracy’ residency in Las Vegas on Nov. 24, and fans who attended the final two shows were gifted with an pleasant surprise. Former GN’R guitarist Izzy Stradlin joined the band onstage for a number of songs throughout the band’s sets, including ’14 Years,’ ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,’ Used to Love Her’ and ‘Paradise City.’ It’s difficult to gauge the relationship between Stradlin and GN’R singer Axl Rose is in modern times, but there seems to be a mutual admiration for one another. In May 2006, Stradlin joined GN’R onstage in New York City for the first time in 13 years, and earlier this year, Stradlin performed with Guns at London’s O2 Arena. It should be noted that both Rose and Stradlin skipping Guns N’ Roses’ 2012 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Known to be somewhat of a recluse in his personal life, Stradlin thrilled die-hard GN’R fans during the Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 Vegas dates, playing six tracks during one show and five the following day. Stradlin has released 11 studio albums since 1992, with his most recent musical contribution being the new single ‘ Baby-Rann .’ Could Stradlin’s increasingly frequent GN’R live cameos lead to something monumental in the future? October 22nd, 2012 Metalkult Rick Diamond, Getty Images With the presidential election just over two weeks away, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has teamed up with filmmaker Jesse Dylan in a video encouraging people to vote only for Congressional candidates that support the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare (watch below). In the video, McCready voices his support for the Affordable Care Act because of his personal experience in dealing with pre-existing conditions. McCready suffers from Crohn’s Disease. “Before the Affordable Care Act, people with conditions like mine could be denied coverage. I know. I was denied twice, even being a member of a famous rock band,” said McCready. “The people who don’t have those kind of resources, they are stuck, they have no choices. But now, we can’t be denied insurance because of something we can’t change—our illnesses. We have choices, we can be insured, and we can focus on having a life.” The two also have issued a joint statement about the issue. Part of the letter explains why they support the Affordable Care Act: “The insurance industry’s structure left 129 million Americans – including 17 million children – at risk of being denied health insurance because they have a pre-existing medical condition. Millions of Americans tried to buy health care, but were turned away or charged more because they were sick (or had been sick), and therefore didn’t look like a good risk. Millions more Americans were unable to afford insurance, or exceeded their lifetime treatment caps, or experienced other difficulties that left them uninsured and without access to affordable health care when they needed it most. Business isn’t a bad thing. But the business of health insurance hasn’t been a good thing in America. Not for anyone with a chronic illness, or with a spouse who got sick and lost their job, or for a gravely ill child and his or her parents. President Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA) recognized these shortcomings and rectified them. ObamaCare does for health care what business could not or would not; it prohibits discrimination against those of us with pre-existing conditions. It ensures everyone, regardless of their employment status or health care situation, access to quality insurance and medical care. Everyone. Period.” McCready has started a petition on SignOn.org where people can join him to pledge their vote for candidates that support the Affordable Care Act. This may seem like an odd warning to offer, but in a recent interview Marilyn Manson told a bizarre story about nearly stealing $20,000 Rolex watches from musician John Mayer. During an interview with PhillyBurbs.com , Manson was referred to as “our last rock star,” citing that bands no longer engage in the legendary debauchery of the past. The healthier lifestyle of modern musicians and lack of youthful rebellion was referred to as the “John Mayer-ization of rock,” which prompted Manson to tell his personal John Mayer story. “I met him [Mayer] right after he got in trouble for saying the “n” word,” begins Manson. “You don’t want to say that word, even if you’re black because you’ll get your ass beat. He was shifty, cagey and weird. Mayer invited me up to his room and he proceeded to show me, out of his safe, his collection of Rolex watches; they’re about $20,000 apiece. Why do you need a watch? I have an iPhone. I was contemplating going into the bathroom, putting whatever metal objects I had in my sock and just rolling him. When he would tell people, ‘Marilyn Manson stole my watches,’ who would believe him?” The answer to Manson’s question is: EVERYBODY! Comparing this to rumors that were widely believed during the course of Manson’s career, a few stolen watches are pretty minor. Poison’s Bret Michaels to Host Travel Channel’s ‘Rock My RV’ Series
October 19th, 2012 Metalkult Michael Buckner, Getty Images Poison frontman Bret Michaels has found his next television project, as he’s signed on to host the new Travel Channel Series ‘ Rock My RV ,’ which starts production in November. Michaels has a longtime love for RVs, and the Travel Channel is allowing him to join a skilled team of designers and fabricators in turning average, ordinary RVs into outrageous, badass mobile mansions. The series is scheduled to premiere on Travel Channel next year. Network GM Andy Singer says, “For the past 25 years, Bret Michaels has spent at least nine months out of the year in a tour bus that he personally designs from top to bottom. We couldn’t think of a better frontman than Bret for the series. He lives and breathes life on the road and undoubtedly holds the record for the most hours logged in a custom coach.” Michaels adds, “Between touring and traveling, I spend a lot of time on the road and my tricked-out, custom coach is my home away from home. I crisscross the country and live in my tour bus, and I know how to take an RV from ordinary to extraordinary. I can’t wait to put my expertise to use and show people how to make their RVs rock.” The vocalist has enjoyed a number of successful TV projects in recent years, beginning with his VH1 dating series ‘Rock of Love.’ He also let the cameras in on his personal life with the documentary series, ‘Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It.’ From there, he went on to become the winner on a season of Donald Trump’s series, ‘Celebrity Apprentice,’ on which he’ll appear again this spring as part of the show’s all-star season.
