Dave Grohl to Perform With ‘Sound City Players’ at Sundance Film Festival Gig

Jason Merritt, Getty Images Dave Grohl ‘s ‘ Sound City ‘ documentary will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah later this month and the Foo Fighters  frontman-turned-fledgling-director will help build the anticipation with a concert at the Park City Live venue featuring some of the movie’s key players. The Sound City Facebook page  stated, “Hey guess what? Sound City Players. Rock Show. Jan. 18th Park City Live. Yup. That’s totally happening.” The Salt Lake Tribune revealed that “core musicians and special guests” are expected to turn up at the show, though none of the performers have been named as of yet. Park City Live CEO Kathryn Burns stated, “The film … showcases the most talented group of musicians in the world and we are thrilled they chose to celebrate the documentary at Park City Live. The evening will be spectacular and we look forward to seeing who will join Dave Grohl and the Sound City Players onstage.” Grohl has spent the better portion of the past year working on the ‘Sound City’ documentary, which traces the history of some of the musicians that have recorded at the legendary Hollywood studio. The film features a wide array of performers, including Paul McCartney  and members of Rage Against the Machine , Nine Inch Nails , Queens of the Stone Age , Metallica  and  Nirvana , among others. Nirvana Members + Paul McCartney Release Studio Version of ‘Cut Me Some Slack’

Sound City For everyone out there who was blown away by surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl , Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear  jamming with Beatles icon Paul McCartney at the ’12-12-12′ Hurricane Sandy benefit show, we’ve got some good news for you! The song performed by the collective, ‘Cut Me Some Slack,’ is now available on iTunes. The incredibly raw track has a strong Nirvana vibe to it, while adding a splash of Sir Paul’s personality and heavier Beatles songs such as ‘Helter Skelter.’ The unlikely collaboration was recorded for Dave Grohl’s highly anticipated ‘Sound City’ documentary, which is set for a February 2013 premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The flick will become available simultaneously through video-on-demand services as the Sundance projector starts to roll. At first, McCartney simply thought he was jamming with Grohl and some random musicians, unknowingly finding himself in the middle of a partial Nirvana reunion. “I didn’t really know who they were,” begins McCartney. “They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said, ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ And somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.” Expectations were high when the public learned that an original song was composed by the group, but when McCartney, Grohl, Novoselic and Smear took the stage at ’12-12-12,’ the worldwide audience knew that they were witnessing something remarkable. The documentary’s soundtrack, ‘Sound City – Real to Reel,’ will see a March 12 release, but ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ is already available to purchase via iTunes . Go buy it! Dave Grohl Named Keynote Speaker at 2013 South by Southwest Conference

John Shearer, Getty Images Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has a little more time on his hands during the band’s hiatus , and he’ll use part of it to travel to Austin next March, where he’ll be the keynote speaker at the annual South by Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival. Grohl will speak to the audience of industry members and music lovers Thursday, March 14, at the Austin Convention Center, which houses most of the South by Southwest’s speakers during the week. The musician should have plenty to discuss, reflecting on his experiences in two of rock’s most iconic bands — Nirvana and Foo Fighters. He’s also been one to lend a hand to other acts and almost became drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers before ultimately deciding to launch Foo Fighters in his post-Nirvana period. Grohl has previously drummed with Queens of the Stone Age , as well, and is  back with that group as they prepare their 2013 release. On top of that, Grohl has spent much of the last year working behind the scenes with some of music’s biggest names on a documentary about the legendary recording board at Los Angeles’ Sound City studio. It was at the studio that the musician played drums on Nirvana’s breakout album, ‘Nevermind.’ The film, titled ‘ Sound City: Real to Reel ,’ is expected to surface in 2013. South by Southwest runs March 12-17, 2013 in Austin, Texas. [button href=”http://loudwire.com/best-foo-fighters-songs/” title=”Next: 10 Best Foo Fighters Songs” align=”center”]

Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Rejoins Queens of the Stone Age for Next Album

Mark Mainz / Jonathan Wood, Getty Images We now know what Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is going to do with at least part of his hiatus , as it’s been revealed that he’s returned to the drumkit to play on the next Queens of the Stone Age album. Queens leader Josh Homme confirmed the news to BBC Radio . For further proof, the band posted a mixing board photo on their Facebook page  (see below) showing the knobs for Homme’s guitar and Grohl’s drums. With the addition of Grohl, that means that longtime drummer Joey Castillo has exited the band . Homme confirmed Castillo’s exit during his appearance on BBC Radio. Incidentally, Castillo joined the group following the 2002 album ‘Songs for the Deaf,’ which featured Grohl on drums. Grohl and Homme have a longtime friendship and musical connection that also included their partnership in the band Them Crooked Vultures . Homme revealed earlier this year that the band had returned to recording after several stops and starts in recent years. The band’s sixth studio album will be the follow-up to their 2007 effort, ‘Era Vulgaris.’ The group had reportedly worked on material dating as far back as 2008, and a supposed 2011 release never came to fruition. Though an official release date has not been announced, a new album is expected in 2013 and the group has already booked appearances at Lollapalooza Brazil and Chile and at the Download Festival . In addition to his upcoming plans with Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl is in the process of wrapping up his ‘ Sound City ‘ documentary, based on the popular Los Angeles recording studio and featuring many top names in rock that have recorded there over the years. Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com / Kevin Winter, Getty Images Several months ago it was revealed that  Slipknot / Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor was one of the artists recording music with  Foo Fighters frontman / ex- Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl for the latter’s ;Sound City’ documentary. Now Taylor has revealed more about the collaboration in an interview with Phoenix radio station KUPD (watch below). Taylor reveals, “[Dave Grohl] sent an email to me, basically explaining this huge project he was doing – the documentary around the infamous board that he got from Sound City, which so many people have recorded on – myself included – we did ‘Iowa’ on that board…He bought it, and I loved the idea that he was like ‘how many albums have been made on this board?” He adds, “He wrote the song, he sent me a demo of it and I was like ‘this is fantastic’ and I just basically wrote the first thing that came off the top of my head. He didn’t even hear it until I went down there to record it. And I laid it down and he was just like ‘wow.’ Because we did it old school – two inch tape, take after take after take. And with that board, man. It just sings, it was really, really cool.” Countless legendary albums were recorded at Sound City, including Nirvana ‘s ‘Nevermind,’ Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours,’ Neil Young’s ‘After The Gold Rush,’ Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ ‘Damn the Torpedoes’ and Rage Against the Machine ‘s self-titled debut.
