Flamenco Legend Paco De Lucia Dead At 66

Though this isn’t technically heavy news in terms of music, we are sad to see the departure of such a legend as Paco de Lucia , the famed flamenco-style guitarist. The man was found dead earlier today at the age of 66, apparently from a heart attack . The story goes that he was at the beach in Cancun with his child and he began to feel unwell, perishing on his way to the local hospital. Thank you for everything you did for music, sir. May your legacy never be forgotten. -KG

Slayer Drummer Dave Lombardo Performs ‘Raining Blood’ With Metal Mariachi Band

Courtesy of Slayer There isn’t much middle ground that thrash legends Slayer share with Mexican mariachi bands, which is why this next video is incredible. Not only did Los Angeles-based metal-meets-mariachi band Metalachi perform an insanely weird version of Slayer’s ‘Raining Blood,’ but they did it with the one and only  Dave Lombardo behind the drum kit. Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo has never been one to pass on a good jam session, having experimented with bands Fantomas and Philm in the past, but this jam session is about has pure as can be. The dichotomy between Lombardo’s ferocious drumming and Metalachi’s brilliant ridiculousness blend together perfectly for a hilarious Mexican gumbo. According to the band’s Facebook profile, the members of Metalachi crossed the boarder from Juarez, Mexico into the U.S. only to discover a partially buried copy of Black Sabbath ‘s ‘Paranoid’ album waiting for them on the other side. After meeting their destiny on American soil, Metalachi has become “the greatest metal band to ever live,” so apparently Dave Lombardo is jumping on the bandwagon early before the group begins to play sold-out arenas. Check out this footage of Metalachi performing ‘Raining Blood’ with a little help from Dave Lombardo. New Species of Tarantula Named After Megadeth Frontman Dave Mustaine

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Scientists love metal, it’s a fact. With the metal gods guiding his way, Brent E. Hendrixson, Ph.D. discovered a new species of tarantula in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. After Hendrixson uncovered the spider, he put down his guitar and wiped off his corpse paint, held the tarantula to the sky and let out a mighty roar. From that moment on, the species would be forever known as Aphonopelma Davemustainei, after Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine . Metal musicians have inspired the official scientific names of various new species in the 21st Century. In 2006, Dr. Mats E. Eriksson named a genus of extinct marine polycheaete annelid worm, Kalloprion Kilmisteri, was dedicated to Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister . This year, the same doctor discovered the jaws of an unclassified marine worm. In keeping with his heavy metal tradition, the marine worm was christened ‘ Kingnites Diamondi ‘ after legendary vocalist King Diamond . After learning of the new tarantula species which now bears his name, Dave Mustaine posted a picture of the spider on his Twitter page, sharing his excitement with his fans. How cool is this? I got my own tarantula named after me! Totally metal!!! twitter.com/DaveMustaine/s… — Dave Mustaine (@DaveMustaine) December 12, 2012 There are currently more than 850 classified species of tarantula, although it is believed that there are at least double that amount in existence. Zakk Wylde Praises Randy Rhoads, Talks Black Sabbath + Recalls Funny Ozzy Osbourne Moment

Jo Hale, Getty Images Black Label Society  recently wrapped up a Canadian tour, and  Rock Cellar caught up with frontman  Zakk Wylde for a wide-ranging conversation about those shows and numerous other subjects. Wylde talked about the influence the late guitarist Randy Rhoads had on him. “One of the biggest things I learned from him is construction, and where you can go with a solo by playing Randy’s music. He was a brilliant soloist who had such a melodic sense — there’d be a beginning, middle and end, as he could tell a whole story in a song.” When Wylde joined Ozzy Osbourne’s band in 1987, he said his aim was to remain faithful to Rhoads’ guitar playing as much as possible. “Even those very first shows, everyone was rooting for me because they knew I was on the team, and loved Randy Rhoads as much as they did. They could see I played Randy’s stuff exactly his way, and had the highest respect for what he did. There’s no way you can fill his shoes, so you just have to give respect to his music and play it accurately. You have to, because this is the house that Rhoads built. And without Randy Rhoads, there never would have been a Zakk Wylde.” A huge fan of Black Sabbath, Wylde and his wife recently had a son and named him Sabbath . He gave his take on the new album Sabbath is in the midst of recording. “Put it this way – if anybody’s going to be working on the new Sabbath record, it couldn’t be in better hands than [producer] Rick Rubin,” Wylde said. “Father Rubin is a massive Sabbath fan as well, and if anything Rick is going to make sure it turns out to be an awesome Sabbath record.” The interview also features Wylde recalling a funny encounter that happened when Ozzy Osbourne visited him at his studio. “He looks up at this poster I have on the wall of Aleister Crowley, and he goes, ‘Zakk  [assuming Ozzy’s voice ], who’s the fucking bald-headed c–t on the wall?’ And I’m just f—ing cracking up.  So Ozzy says, “What the f—’s so funny?” And I said, ‘Dude, you don’t know who that is?’ Ozzy goes, ‘Why the f— should I know who he is? Who the f— is it?’ So I said, ‘Ozzy, you’ve only been singing about him for the last 30 f—ing years! It’s Aleister Crowley, bro!’ There’s a pause, then Ozzy says, ‘Oh, is that what he looks like?’ I kid you not.” In addition to being a guitar wizard, Wylde is a man of many other talents as well. He has a line of signature hot sauces, hosts a sports talk radio show and wrote the book ‘ Bringing Metal to the Children ‘ that was released earlier this year. Black Label Society head south for a tour that begins Nov. 11 in Mexico, which will also take them to Argentina and Brazil. Roadrunner Leave it to Corey Taylor to go big with his latest vision. The Stone Sour singer just continued his dedication to the ambitious ‘ House of Gold & Bones ‘ double-album by introducing intricate packaging for the two releases, which when put together forms the shape of a house. Fans will be able to get the first part this week when ‘House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 1′ arrives in stores, but it will take the second part, which isn’t due until next spring, to complete the house-shaped packaging.
