Ex-Metallica Bassist Jason Newsted Details Plans for Musical Comeback

NewstedHeavyMetal.com As we reported Friday (Nov. 16), Jason Newsted  has reconnected with fans through a new website , but now the former  Metallica  bassist has laid out details of his musical comeback. In an appearance on the ’Friday Night Rocks’ radio show, Newsted revealed that he’s ready to rock more than just your Web browser. Blabbermouth has posted a transcript from Newsted’s chat with host Eddie Trunk, in which the bassist says he’s going to release material under the name Newsted Heavy Metal Music. “I’ve thought about this for a long time, putting my name on a project other than just coming up with a clever name, like Echobrain or Papa Wheelie or something,” explained Newsted. “We have a lot of cool names for projects, but this is the first time with my name and really trying to get out to the people that I played for by the millions in the past with Metallica.” He went on to say, “Whatever it ends up being — if it’s five songs, 20 songs, 50 songs … I don’t even know what the heck I’m gonna do. I have so much music from over the years. I have a bunch of new stuff … I’m just trying to figure out exactly what I wanna unleash on everybody first. That’s kind of what it’s coming down to — the timing of things and how I wanna hit people with it.” While assuring Trunk that he still thinks vinyl is “the most endearing and the most personal” format, so “I wanna make sure that that part is there,” Newsted sounds ready to take advantage of digital distribution by releasing a slew of shorter projects, a la the bands who are “doing four tracks at a time in EP form every few months, letting people have some fresh metal.” For Newsted, it’s a progression of his early days as a tape-trader, and the drive to share that he credits with getting him the Metallica gig in the first place. But instead of having to rely on tapes, envelopes, and postage, “Now I can do that with one push of a button and it’s a squillion people. I know about the labors and what it takes one at a time, and I’m not afraid to do that, but I know that I have the chance now, from all of my hard work for 30 years, I’m gonna be able to share with a bunch of people at once. Anybody that really gives a snot about the music and cares about what I’m doing, I wanna share with them.” All this renewed activity is the culmination of an odyssey that started when Newsted left Metallica over a decade ago. As he put it, “I did a very serious, reclusive deal. I built a ranch in Montana in the center of a forest of millions of acres of nothing. That kind of thing where I just said, ‘OK, screw it, man! I’m outta here.’ I went that far opposite of my connection with the people. It took me 12 years to come back to earth, and here I am now. And my big, black boots are on the ground and I’m ready to go.” Click here to view the full transcript of Newsted’s conversation with Eddie Trunk. Soundgarden Rock ‘Live on Letterman’ Gig at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater

SoundgardenWorld.com New Yorkers had the opportunity to see Soundgarden play at the very intimate Ed Sullivan Theater as part of the ‘Live on Letterman’ concert series. Soungarden are out in promotion of ‘King Animal,’ their first album in 16 years, and they kicked off the night with new tracks ‘Worse Dreams’ and ‘By Crooked Steps.’ Seven out of the 10 songs they played were off of ‘King Animal’ which gave fans a first listen at hearing the new tunes in a live setting. It took a while for the crowd to warm up, as many were hearing these songs for the first time, but the enthusiasm built pulled out some classics such as ‘Incessant Mace,’ ‘Beyond the Wheel’ and ‘Fell on Black Days.’ Soundgarden sounded flawless as Cornell’s vocal range took our ears to an entirely new level. The serious shredding skills of guitarist Kim Thayil is mind blowing when you see him perform live, and the booming bass of Ben Shepherd and steady beats from drummer Matt Cameron topped it all off. During the performance Cornell, joked that that David Letterman was managing them now. Earlier in the evening, while they were taping their appearance on CBS ‘Late Show,’ host David Letterman told the band after their performance that he’d like to manage the band. Cornell went on to quip that the band is not doing any more small gigs, only Madison Square Garden from now on. That joke didn’t last long, since right after ‘Live on Letterman,’ Cornell did in fact play a “small gig,” for a big cause. Cornell performed a solo set which was a benefit show for Hurricane Sandy victims at Bowery Ballroom. In a surprise, he was joined by his Soundgarden bandmates during that gig. Soundgarden’s takeover of New York City continues tonight (Nov. 13) with a gig at Irving Plaza. Check Out Soundgarden’s ‘Live On Letterman’ Set ‘Live On Letterman’ Set list: 1. Worse Dreams 2. Soundgarden Perform Surprise Set During Chris Cornell’s Hurricane Sandy Benefit Show

Antonio Marino Jr., MarinoPics.com With their new disc ‘King Animal’ out today (Nov. 13), Soundgarden gave New York one heck of a preview yesterday. They kicked the day off with a special performance for ‘Live on Letterman’ that was streamed via a live webcast allowing fans around the word to tune in. Performing a 10-song set, the band focused on their new music showcasing several tracks from ‘King Animal’ but also played some of their classic tunes as well like ‘Fell on Black Days’ and ‘Incessant Mace.’ Check out our recap and whole archived show here . After ‘Live on Letterman,’ Cornell set his sights on helping out those impacted by Hurricane Sandy with a benefit show at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Although the show was billed as a solo acoustic show, some fans must have held out hope that the rest of the band would join Cornell onstage at some point in the night, and during the evening, that wish came true. According to Brooklyn Vegan , the rest of the band assisted Cornell with six Soundgarden songs: ‘Fell On Black Days,’ ‘Black Saturday,’ ‘Blow Up the Outside World,’ ‘Halfway There,’ ‘Black Hole Sun,’ and ‘Outshined.’ Fan-filmed footage of ‘Black Saturday’ can be seen below in addition to Chris Cornell’s solo performance of ‘Hunger Strike.’ Soundgarden aren’t finished with New York yet, as tonight the band will play a headlining show at Irving Plaza. The concert is one of three 2012 club gigs that were announced before the band unveiled their 2013 touring plans . Deftones, ‘Koi No Yokan’ – Album Review

Reprise The guiding principle of Deftones albums is the push and pull between singer Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter. That’s an age-old rock ‘n’ roll construct — the tension between singer and guitar player — and Moreno and Carpenter being at consistent sonic odds is what makes Deftones music so dynamic. They employ this technique on their new album ‘Koi No Yokan.’ It’s recommended that you listen to all Deftones albums, especially this one, in the dark, with the volume turned up, to fully absorb the layers of sound without distraction or interruption. There is so much more going on under the surface of those quiet-loud bursts and the exchange of energy between Moreno’s croon and Carpenter’s heavy artillery demands a deeper listen. ‘Koi No Yokan’ is erected on the aforementioned foundation, with Carpenter pounding out gritty, bottom-heavy, resonant riffery, while Moreno adds a bit of an androgynous touch, thanks to his clean vocals, which have always been indicative of his PJ Harvey worship. Moreno screams like a banshee, at times, but it’s his clean, pretty vocals which are way more interesting to Deftones fans. They are almost like an instrument unto themselves. ‘Koi No Yokan’ is a bloodied record that bares its claws. ‘Swerve City’ opens the disc, and is the get-it-out-of-the-way song in that it makes the point that the Sacramento, Calif., band is here to rock and retain its heaviness. The lush ‘Romantic Dreams’ has a whimsical bend, with Moreno cooing “I wish this night would never end” over a Meshuggah-influenced gust of Carpenter riffage. That’s the case for much of his techy guitar tone, which anchors the album and makes it feel constructed of iron ore. The dynamics aren’t just at play because Moreno and Carpenter face off musically. DJ Frank Delgado is also working overtime to spin those extra sonic flourishes into the mix, like the sound bites buried under that gnarly riff in ‘Romantic Dreams.’ ‘Leathers’ has a ghostly, cinematic quality to the first few seconds, before it erupts into a torrent of screams and wails. ‘Poltergeist’ kicks off with handclaps and a engine-revving riff that could cause a 50-car pile up. ‘Entombed’ is the prettiest song on the record, with sweeping vocals and a shimmery tone. But that doesn’t mean it’s soft. It’s just swells with beats that sound like a thumping heart and there’s an electrical, Delgado-designed current that buzzes through the fade out. ‘Graphic Nature’ is melancholic, with chunky riffery, while the undulating single ‘Tempest’ has a melody line similar to that of ‘Change (In the House of Flies),’ which is the band’s biggest radio hit. It doesn’t sound like ‘Change,’ but it is from the same melodic family. ‘Gauze’ could cause an involuntary ejection from your seat, since it comes on with a full blast of noise. ‘Rosemary’ is a sweeping exercise in quiet-loud, Deftonesian dynamics and contrasts. It starts the final moments of the album correctly. It sends volts of electrical charges rushing through your veins. ‘Koi No Yokan’ is 11 tracks, so it doesn’t wear out its welcome or leave you wanting more, either. It’s a satisfying length and since the songs have such a thunderous guitar bottom end, it would tire you out if it went on for too long, so the band and producer cut things off at the right time. Much of the underlying flourish, provided by Delgado, has a film score quality to it and could be cut up, dissected, re-arranged and used in noirish thrillers. No, we don’t mean slasher or horror flicks, either. While ‘Koi No Yokan’ might not match ‘White Pony,’ which is the transitional and pinnacle album for the band that came out over 12 years ago, it has a similar spirit to that album and the self-titled release that followed it. In fact, if ‘Koi No Yokan’ had come out after 2003′s ‘Deftones,’ it would not interrupt the catalog’s flow. Overall, if the Smashing Pumpkins were heavier, ballsier and angrier, they’d make albums that sound like this, since Deftones do have an alt-metal vibe. Moreno’s lyrics are often from-the-journal-page and stream of thought, making them entirely open-ended and capable of attracting the disaffected. The album’s title is a Japanese term for the moment you know you will fall in love with someone, and the disc itself delivers more of what the band’s fans have come to love. Deftones already made that creative left turn a decade ago, and it served them well, so they serve it up again.

Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger Looking Forward to ‘Most Unique Wedding the Planet Has Ever Seen’

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com A year that began with Nickelback ‘s Chad Kroeger doing a simple co-write on a song with pop star Avril Lavigne is ending with the pair engaged and planning their wedding. Now, Kroeger says he’s expecting a ceremony that will probably be anything but traditional. Kroeger tells Men’s Health magazine that he’s taken a back seat while his bride-to-be plans a good portion of the wedding. He explained, “We [grooms] get such an incredibly small chunk in terms of what we can actually participate in … I get control over nothing. I just show up. But I’m glad, because she has … traversed these territories before. These are uncharted waters for me, so it’s nice to have her to guide me through this.” The frontman says he’s quite impressed with what he’s seen so far, adding, “She’s got great ideas. I would have gone a little too traditional, I think, and she’s giving it a real rock ‘n’ roll edge. The groomsmen won’t be wearing piano neckties, (but) let’s just say she’s taking the bull by the horns and steering the ship towards what is going to be the most unique wedding that the planet has probably ever seen.” Kroeger told the magazine that he never envisioned himself as a married man, but his relationship with Lavigne got him thinking otherwise. He adds, “Honestly, it was more my idea than hers to get married. I’m just lucky she said yes.” Lavigne was previously married to Sum 41 ‘s Deryck Whibley. Lavigne’s current and former beaus recently had a humorous exchange over Whibley’s decision with his current girlfriend to dress as the newly-engaged couple for Halloween. Refused Reflect on 2012 Reunion + Announce Hometown Finale

Refused – Official Site When we reflect on 2012, one of the better reunions to take place will have been that of Swedish hardcore punk outfit Refused . However, the band has revealed that the time has come for the reunion to wind down, and they’ve decided that the best place to do it would be their hometown in Umea, Sweden at the Exel Arena on Dec. 15. The group made the most of their time back together, hitting just about every major festival you can imagine. Their touring took them to such festivals as  Coachella , Rock am Ring, Roskilde, Groezrock, Download, Primavera Sound, Fuji Rock, and Pukkelpop among others. Plus, they made a rare television appearance on ‘ Late Night with Jimmy Fallon .’ As the band prepare to say farewell, they decided to put their thoughts into words and offered this note of reflection on their Facebook page: So there were those years right after school, when you were 15 and pissed off and everyone thought you were a loser and you ran around with the other weirdos, generating weirdness and little else. And there were those years when what set you apart from the others become a fixation and a lifestyle and you had a band and people talked about what you did but you were so used to being weird you just lumped them in with the rest of the slanderers. Then there were those years when the ideas you’d clung to through late adolescence were beginning to ring hollow and you got more and more confused and destructive and the band broke up and you had rent to pay. That was among the tougher years. And then slowly, over a span of time, you began to sort yourself out and your friends started making sensible decisions in their lives and it suddenly began to seem like most of you were gonna be ok. And then there was the year when you stopped being a petulent kid and you got your favorite musicians together in a room again and decided that you were gonna accept the love of thousands of listeners, accept the success that was waiting there to be had and just in general enjoy being appreciated for the exact same qualities that made you a freak to your contemporaries in your teens. This was one of the better years. And now it is coming to a close. It’s been kind to us. And that old punkrock golem “The shape of punk to come” has done good. The hatchet is buried, 1998 is not such a terrible memory for us anymore. We’re going home. And we’re doing it in style. With old friends and new acquaintances in tow we’re gonna take over our old hometown Umeå for one more night, just because we can. On the 15th of december at the Exel arena we’ll be sharing the stage with these magnificent comrades: Randy, a band of punkrock bandidos from the north who we befriended years before we even were Refused, Two White Horses, an excellent sister/brother-duo from Sävar, both of whom we’ve individually collaborated with in different musical projects through the years, and Råd Kjetil Senza Testa, a new and exciting musical collective consisting of old Umeå pop and hardcore scenesters, among them the guy who produced the very first version of New noise for a local hardcore compilation in early 1997. We unconditionally endorse these bands. Great music, good crude fun, what more do you need? It’s going to be one of those nights. Thank you for populating the pit in 2012. Over and out.
