After Papa Roach rounded out 2012 with five straight victories and entrance into Loudwire’s Cage Match Hall of Fame, it’s time for two new bands to kick off 2013 with a massive matchup. Alice in Chains have unleashed their new track ‘Hollow’ off of their highly anticipated upcoming disc, which is still untitled and set for a spring release. The forthcoming album will be the band’s follow-up to 2009’s ‘Black Gives Way to Blue.’ Buckcherry heat things up with their brand new single ‘Gluttony’ off of their sixth studio disc, ‘Confessions,’ due out Feb. 19. The band is kicking off 2013 with a headlining tour around the United States before joining Kid Rock for a jaunt in February. For a full list of dates and cities, go here . No Comments »Jerry Cantrell Performs With Duff McKagan’s Walking Papers, Discusses Alice in Chains Album
December 20th, 2012 Metalkult Michael Loccisano, Getty Images After spending a good portion of the year in the studio recording the upcoming Alice in Chains album, singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell is in the mood to get out and play. Cantrell was a surprise guest of the Walking Papers during their performance at the Crocodile Café in Seattle Saturday night (Dec. 15). Seattle station KISW 99.9 FM reports that Cantrell joined the band, which features Duff McKagan , the Missionary Position’s Jeff Angell and Ben Anderson, and former Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin, for two songs during their performance. Cantrell rocked guitar on ‘Your Secret Is Safe With Me’ (which can be seen below) and ‘Two Tickets.’ Walking Papers released their debut disc back in October. It features a guest appearance from another Seattle favorite — Pearl Jam ‘s Mike McCready — lending some guitar assistance. As for the upcoming Alice in Chains disc, Cantrell told Revolver (excerpted by Grunge Report ) that the as-yet-untitled album stays true to form. He explained, “I don’t think you’ll be surprised by anything you hear. It’s us. It’s also really unique. It’s got all the elements of any record we’ve put out, but it’s unlike any record we’ve put out. Basically, it’s the next chapter in the Alice in Chains book, and it’s going to be a big one.” Though a release date and title have yet to be announced for the new Alice in Chains record, the new song ‘ Hollow ‘ just arrived, complete with a fan-generated lyric video. December 15th, 2012 Metalkult Roger Kisby, Getty Images There’s just a few more days to wait until Alice in Chains issue their new single ‘ Hollow ‘ in full, but for now, fans can get their first taste of the track by checking out a song snippet that’s been posted on Amazon. The brief clip finds the band mining familiar territory, with trudging guitars and moody vocals leading the way. While it’s hard to glean exactly what the context of the song will be from just a few lines, fans can analyze the following stanza that appears for clues: “ Running in circles, slowing down / rolling against the closing now / Easy to feed off the weakened thing / Harder to say what I really mean .” Though the song snippet tails off after the last line, it’s apparent during the fade that the style shifts into something a little more forceful and dynamic after the final word is uttered. Listen to the song snippet here . Alice in Chains have spent most of the year working on new music, but the roots of the album actually date back to 2011. Heart ‘s Ann Wilson , a close friend of the band, told Ultimate Classic Rock last year, “I went over to visit them in the studio where they were working on some new stuff — they sound amazing! How can Jerry [Cantrell] not sound amazing, but I mean, it really does — they’re a monster.” The band has been making the lead-up to the release of ‘Hollow’ an interactive event, posting lyrical phrases on Instagram over the past week and asking fans to submit photos they’ve taken or created that are inspired by the lyrics. The project will culminate this Tuesday (Dec. 18), the same day the song hits the airwaves, with fans being able to visit the band’s website and see the fan-submitted photos inspired by the tune’s lyrics coming together with the song. As of yet, the band have not revealed a title for their new album nor a release date, but the offering of the late year single is a sign that the official news on the full record will be coming soon. December 14th, 2012 Metalkult Adam Bettcher / Ethan Miller, Getty Images The Download Festival has done it again, putting together one of the best music lineups in recent memory, especially if you’re a hard rock and metal fan. The 2013 event, which runs June 14-16 at Donington Park in the U.K., just increased the awesomeness of its already stellar lineup by adding Stone Sour and Mastodon . For Stone Sour, this marks the second major festival of 2013 where Corey Taylor will get to pull double duty (the other is Ozzfest Japan ), as his other band, Slipknot , have been confirmed as one of Download’s headliners. Stone Sour have been building extra buzz from their ‘House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 1′ album and their European tour with Papa Roach . As an extra little gift for fans, by the time Stone Sour return to Download, ‘House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 2′ will be in stores. The status of Mastodon by the time that Download comes around is a bit murkier. Brent Hinds recently revealed that while the band is enjoying supporting their 2011 album, ‘The Hunter,’ they actually have a good start making music for their next effort, possibly using some of early 2013 to lay down tracks. Depending on how they progress, the band will either still be promoting ‘The Hunter’ or potentially gearing up for a new release. The three-day event will have Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Rammstein as the headlining bands for the individual days. Other acts set to play Download include Bullet for My Valentine , Queens of the Stone Age , 30 Seconds to Mars , Motorhead , the Gaslight Anthem , Alice in Chains , A Day to Remember , H.I.M. , Volbeat and the reunited Coal Chamber . December 4th, 2012 Metalkult Facebook: Alice in Chains Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell has confirmed that the band recently finished recording their new album, due out in 2013. The new disc will mark the follow-up to their 2009 release ‘Black Gives Way to Blue.’ Alice in Chains started working on the new tunes back in 2011 but were sidelined when Cantrell had to undergo surgery on his shoulder. Back in the saddle, Cantrell recently spoke to Guitar World about the pressures surrounding the new disc, saying, “It’s like having to deal with the sophomore jinx for the second time in our career.” Cantrell, of course, is referring to writing and recording music with the band’s new lineup several years after the tragic passing of singer Layne Staley in 2002. The band’s current lineup features Cantrell joined by William DuVall on vocals and guitar, Mike Inez on bass and Sean Kinney on drums. For the new disc, Alice in Chains worked with producer Nick Raskulinecz whose resume includes work with the Deftones and the Foo Fighters and engineer Paul Figueroa. Cantrell talked about how the post-Staley Alice In Chains measures up, explaining, “In my opinion, that record [Black Gives Way to Blue] stood up to anything else we’ve put out in our career and this new one is right up there, as well.” Although no official release date has been confirmed yet, it has been speculated the disc may make its debut within the first few months of the new year. With Alice in Chains already confirmed as one of the top acts for the 2013 Download festival, it looks like it could be a busy year for the Seattle rockers. That was the case recently for hard rocking outfits Hurt and Smile Empty Soul , who found themselves spending a November day in Michigan covering the Alice in Chains classic ‘No Excuses.’ Radio station Banana 101.5 reports that a day prior to their performance at The Machine Shop in Flint, Mich., the two acts made their way to Rochester Hills’ 37 Studios to lay down the track. The Matt Dalton-produced cut found the two acts keeping in the primarily acoustic roots of the original, though they did add a few unique touches to make the song their own. In particular, the percussion on the track has a more upbeat and funky feel to it throughout. Though official release plans have not been announced, Banana 101.5 reports that the song will be available for download at some point, with the proceeds likely tied to a charitable effort of some kind. October 24th, 2012 Metalkult YouTube Duff McKagan is taking a little different approach to promoting ‘The Taking’ album, as he’s got a full-length film that goes along with the music. McKagan and his band Loaded intend to show off the new movie in a series of 10 vignettes that will roll out on the band’s YouTube page . The first episode has just gone online and can be seen below. More episodes will follow every Tuesday at the site through Jan. 1, 2013. In the first episode, we get to see McKagan and his band play the new track ‘Executioner’s Song,’ followed by a portion of a day in the life of the group. The singer-bassist is up at the crack of dawn, hanging out by the sea, plotting a band meeting and we get to see him waking all of his bandmates up for what could be one of their most important shows to date. Over the course of the ten episodes, we get to see not only his bandmates — Mike Squires, Jeff Rouse, and Isaac Carpenter — but also some of McKagan’s musical pals like Alice in Chains ‘ Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney, Guns N’ Roses ‘ Gilby Clarke, the Sex Pistols ‘ Steve Jones, ZZ Top ‘s Billy F. Gibbons , and Motorhead ‘s Lemmy Kilmister . The movie portion of ‘The Taking’ comes from Black Dahlia Films in association with Eagle Rock Entertainment.
