Trent Reznor Reboots Nine Inch Nails With Members of Jane’s Addiction, King Crimson + More

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Trent Reznor has just unveiled some drop-to-your-knees-and-praise-the-lord-type of exciting news. He has confirmed that Nine Inch Nails  are officially rebooted with a fresh, all-star lineup, blending previous NIN collaborators along with new members plucked from celebrated acts such as Jane’s Addiction , King Crimson and Puscifer . And as if that wasn’t cool enough, Nine Inch Nails are also set to embark on a U.S. tour beginning this summer. The new Nine Inch Nails collective is a prominent one, with seasoned NIN members Alessandro Cortini (keyboards / synth / guitar / bass) and Ilan Rubin (drums) continuing their legacies with Reznor’s brilliant industrial act. In addition to the trio, Nine Inch Nails have welcomed former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery, King Crimson multi-instrumentalist Adrian Belew and Puscifer / Telefon Tel Aviv musician Josh Eustis into the group. In a note from Trent Reznor posted on Pitchfork , the sonic brainiac explained the newly revamped version of Nine Inch Nails: Nine Inch Nails are touring this year. I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked – which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows. The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014. Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon. TR Prior to all the Nine Inch Nails awesomeness, Trent Reznor’s side project with wife Mariqueen Maandig , Rob Sheridan and Atticus Ross –  How to Destroy Angels  – will release their debut full-length album, ‘Welcome Oblivion’ on March 5. That outfit has also scheduled a number of North American dates for 2013. Trent Reznor-Guided ‘Beats’ Streaming Service to Launch in Summer 2013

Sean Gardner, Getty Images Interscope honcho Jimmy Iovine spilled the beans earlier this year that Trent Reznor ‘s involvement with Dr. Dre’s Beats by Dre service involved a new streaming service. Now comes word that the Beats Electronics service will be available beginning this summer. According to Billboard , Iovine revealed during Tuesday’s (Feb. 12) AllThingsD Dive Into Media Conference that the service would simply be called Beats (it had been previously given the tentative title Daisy) and would rely heavily on hand-curated lists in order to differentiate itself from such other streaming services as Spotify, Rhapsody, Muve and Slacker. “We are making tons and tons of curated lists,” said Iovine. “If you go to the gym, we’ll know where you are. So when you wake up in the morning, there will be a list waiting for you.” As for Reznor’s involvement, he’s serving as chief creative officer and is offering his expertise in helping to personalize playlists for each listener. As someone who is overseeing the curation of playlists, he’ll also study algorithms to help determine what might fit each person the best. Iovine stated that they wanted to “marry math with emotion,” and added, “Right now there are only mathematical solutions.” The label chief also explained that Beats plans to give artists access to user data, allowing them the ability to know exactly who their audience is and where their music is being used. Trent Reznor Lends Creative Touch to Daisy Streaming Service

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor revealed last fall that he had been working with sound specialists Beats by Dre on something pretty special and now we know what that is. Longtime music mogul Jimmy Iovine confirmed at a Beats by Dre event that Reznor is contributing to Daisy, a new music streaming service that has yet to launch. Spin reports that Reznor’s title is Chief Creative Officer and that the service will feature music brought to listener’s ears by Beats Electronic, which Iovine co-founded. Though he didn’t detail exactly what Reznor’s duties would entail, Iovine stated that the musician would play a large role in Daisy’s look and feel and will focus his energies toward “the connection between the artist and the consumer.” Iovine added, “What’s missing from the digital music landscape is the cultural context. We need to bring an emotional connection back to the act of music discovery. With Trent and now [Daisy CEO Ian Rogers] we have the right team in place to do it.” At present, the Daisy streaming service is tentatively expected to launch in the second half of 2013. Even with the new gig, Reznor remains committed to creating music. It was just announced that his How to Destroy Angels band will offer their first full-length album, ‘ Welcome Oblivion ,’ on March 5. In addition, Reznor mentioned recently that he was working on new music from Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor Reveals New Nine Inch Nails Material ‘In the Works’

Sean Gardner, Getty Images The news just keeps getting better for fans of Trent Reznor . While he has received many accolades for his soundtrack work over the last couple of years, fans have been longing for the return of Nine Inch Nails . Now comes word from Reznor himself that Nine Inch Nails are definitely back in action and working on new material. Reznor recently revealed that his How to Destroy Angels project would be arriving with new music, which led to questions about if and when the frontman would revive the band where he made his musical name. The Nine Inch Nails mastermind tells  Rolling Stone  in a new interview, “All signs point to yes. Yeah, there will be new music. There are some things in the works.” Not only could fans potentially see a new album or singles, but Reznor, who retired Nine Inch Nails from touring in 2009, revealed that there may be some shows, as well. When asked about the idea of performing, he explained, “Yeah, if it feels right. It’s a possibility. I never said that that wasn’t going to happen, just that it couldn’t go on as it was. Having a few years doing other things, I’ve enjoyed [them] and I’m enjoying doing How to Destroy Angels, and there will be a place for stuff that falls in the Nine Inch Nails column of things. It’s a different kind of work. Stay tuned. We’ll see what happens.” In other news, but Reznor has been working with the Beats by Dre company on “a number of very interesting projects.” He also provided the soundtrack to the new video game, ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops.’ As for How to Destroy Angels, we know that will come first as they’ve already revealed a Nov. 13 release for the ‘ An Omen ‘ EP. The group, which also features Reznor’s wife Mariqueen Maandig and his music composing partner Atticus Ross, are also working on a full-length album that will follow early next year. Trent Reznor Advises Young Acts on Making It in the Music Industry

Sean Gardner, Getty Images It’s a whole new world out there for young artists looking to catch a break and established artists trying to maintain their momentum, but Trent Reznor says the key to approaching the current music business model is somewhat the same for all musicians. He tells Techdirt.com , “My advice today, to established acts and new-coming acts, is the same advice I’d give to myself: pause for a minute, and really think about ‘What is your goal? Where do you see yourself?’” He adds, “As a 22-year-old kid in Cleveland, it seemed to me that just playing out in bars, hoping someone noticed your band, and then offered you a record contract, while that’s possible, I didn’t know anybody, and didn’t know anybody who knew anybody that that had ever happened to. The strategy, then, was let’s work on getting a band, and something that means something, music that matters, music that I feel proud of, and a vibe and name and ‘brand’ of this thing, and then try to reach maybe some small labels that had music in the same vein of what I liked.” But in today’s music scene, there are many more options for getting your music to listeners, and Reznor says it’s more important than ever to define what your ultimate goal is. He explains, “If I were that person [starting out] today, there’s a hell of a lot of things that didn’t exist then, that exist now — like YouTube, like the ability to self-publish, like the ability to reach everyone in the world from your bedroom if they’re interested. I’d focus my efforts on what seems like a logical way to do that [and] that maintains integrity. If my goal is to compete with Rihanna on the pop charts, I’d think that requires going through a major label system with a powerful manager.” For Reznor, he says the decision to revisit the major label strategy for his latest project How to Destroy Angels fit a particular goal, one that differs from what he has to do with Nine Inch Nails . He says he was worried that only Nine Inch Nails fans would follow his new project and that it might not fit what they were looking for, so a label provides him the opportunity to reach more people. He explains, “The main reason I do what I do is I want to do something that matters. I want to be able to create art that reaches the maximum amount of people on my terms … That was a key component … Because it came down to us — us being the band now — sitting around and identifying what our goals were. And the top priority wasn’t to make money. It was to try to reach the most amount of people, and try to reach the most amount of people effectively, that doesn’t feel like it’s coming completely from my backyard. Because I don’t want this project, ultimately, to just be dismissed as a ‘side project’ or … (loud sigh) … a ‘patronizing affair with Trent and his wife.’ Sounds terrible, you know?” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/best-nine-inch-nails-songs/” title=”Next: 10 Best Nine Inch Nails Songs” align=”center”]
