YouTube: Metallica Metallica fans are a devoted bunch and you get to see their passion for the band in full effect in the newly posted video of ‘Master of Puppets’ that’s part of the upcoming ‘ Quebec Magnetic ‘ DVD. The group deliver a blistering performance musically, but James Hetfield , perhaps encouraged by the audience response, lets the crowd fill in some of the vocal parts on ‘Master of Puppets’ while he and the band let loose with their furious playing. The song is definitely a highlight of the forthcoming release. Metallica headed to Quebec City in the fall of 2009 as part of their ‘World Magnetic Tour’ and the shows were filmed for the forthcoming DVD/Blu-Ray offering, ‘Quebec Magnetic,’ which will be in stores Dec. 10. This will be the band’s first release via their new Blackened Recordings label. The group recently announced the launch of the label in coordination with the news that they had taken control of the masters of their past recordings, giving the band full access over how their music is used going forward. Part of having control means the band can offer their concert film at the reasonable price of $15.98 for either the DVD or Blu-Ray format. Fans were allowed to vote on the set list, and the home video will include 18 songs from the concert, plus an additional eight “bonus songs.” ‘Quebec Magnetic’ can be pre-ordered here . Virginia Tech Metallica are one of the most stringent bands when it comes to usage of their trademark, which makes the new Virginia Tech ‘Enter Sandman’ shirts something truly special. The group gave the school permission to print the shirts with the idea that the money raised would go to the Morgan Harrington Scholarship Fund. Harrington was a Virginia Tech student who went missing after attending a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena in October 2009. After several months of searching, her body was found on an Albemarle County farm in January 2010. Her killer still remains at large. The group initially put up a significant reward when Harrington went missing and even though her body was discovered, the band have continued their involvement in the search for her killer. Earlier this year, singer James Hetfield filmed a new PSA describing the murder and showing a sketch of the suspect in question while seeking any new information. NBC’s WVIR-TV reports that so far, sales of the shirt have raised $17,000 and Virginia Tech officials say they hope to make the shirt available to the public at the beginning of every football season. The shirts are currently available for order in both long-sleeve and short-sleeve via the Virginia Tech bookstore. To learn more about the Morgan Harrington Scholarship Fund, click here . Blackened Recordings Metallica have just revealed the beginning of a new era in their history. Not only has the band launched their own record label, Blackened Recordings, but as of today, all of Metallica’s master recordings have reverted back to the band, giving them full ownership of their entire catalog. All the way back in 1994, Metallica made a deal with Warner Music Group that on Nov. 30, 2012, the band would exclusively own all of their recordings, including all their music videos and long form videos. According to statements from various band members, there is no ill will against Warner, the move is simply to possess full creative control of what happens with the music of Metallica from here forth. “We would like to thank everyone at the Warner Music Group for 28 years of a fantastic relationship, particularly since 1994 where we truly felt we had partners in every aspect of our business in North America,” says James Hetfield . Blackened Recordings will now be the home of everything Metallica, and will handle all marketing and promotion duties. The label is set to personally license their releases to Universal Music Group internationally. “It’s always been about control for us as a band,” says drummer Lars Ulrich . “Forming Blackened Recordings is the ultimate in independence, giving us 100% control and putting us in the driver’s seat of our own creative destiny.” Blackened Recordings will put out it’s inaugural release, the ‘ Quebec Magnetic ‘ DVD, on Dec. 10, which showcases footage from two Quebec City live performances recorded in 2009. NewstedHeavyMetal.com As we reported Friday (Nov. 16), Jason Newsted has reconnected with fans through a new website , but now the former Metallica bassist has laid out details of his musical comeback. In an appearance on the ’Friday Night Rocks’ radio show, Newsted revealed that he’s ready to rock more than just your Web browser. Blabbermouth has posted a transcript from Newsted’s chat with host Eddie Trunk, in which the bassist says he’s going to release material under the name Newsted Heavy Metal Music. “I’ve thought about this for a long time, putting my name on a project other than just coming up with a clever name, like Echobrain or Papa Wheelie or something,” explained Newsted. “We have a lot of cool names for projects, but this is the first time with my name and really trying to get out to the people that I played for by the millions in the past with Metallica.” He went on to say, “Whatever it ends up being — if it’s five songs, 20 songs, 50 songs … I don’t even know what the heck I’m gonna do. I have so much music from over the years. I have a bunch of new stuff … I’m just trying to figure out exactly what I wanna unleash on everybody first. That’s kind of what it’s coming down to — the timing of things and how I wanna hit people with it.” While assuring Trunk that he still thinks vinyl is “the most endearing and the most personal” format, so “I wanna make sure that that part is there,” Newsted sounds ready to take advantage of digital distribution by releasing a slew of shorter projects, a la the bands who are “doing four tracks at a time in EP form every few months, letting people have some fresh metal.” For Newsted, it’s a progression of his early days as a tape-trader, and the drive to share that he credits with getting him the Metallica gig in the first place. But instead of having to rely on tapes, envelopes, and postage, “Now I can do that with one push of a button and it’s a squillion people. I know about the labors and what it takes one at a time, and I’m not afraid to do that, but I know that I have the chance now, from all of my hard work for 30 years, I’m gonna be able to share with a bunch of people at once. Anybody that really gives a snot about the music and cares about what I’m doing, I wanna share with them.” All this renewed activity is the culmination of an odyssey that started when Newsted left Metallica over a decade ago. As he put it, “I did a very serious, reclusive deal. I built a ranch in Montana in the center of a forest of millions of acres of nothing. That kind of thing where I just said, ‘OK, screw it, man! I’m outta here.’ I went that far opposite of my connection with the people. It took me 12 years to come back to earth, and here I am now. And my big, black boots are on the ground and I’m ready to go.” Click here to view the full transcript of Newsted’s conversation with Eddie Trunk.
