Singer A. Jay Popoff on Lit: ‘This Band Has Always Been a Brotherhood’

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Lit have had one heck of a journey as a band, releasing their fifth studio album, ‘The View From The Bottom,’ last year after an eight year break. They were also recently part of 2012’s ShipRocked Cruise, which featured numerous talented acts on a boat sailing from Florida to the Bahamas and back. While on the cruise, we had the chance to chat with frontman A. Jay Popoff about the new how, how the tragic death of their drummer Allen Shellenberger affected the band, as well as future plans for Lit and much more. Lit have endured numerous hardships as a band; how has that made you stronger individually and as a group? It definitely changed perspective on the big picture. This band has always been a brotherhood, you hear any band say that but our band literally grew up together. To lose a brother, it’s hard enough not only when you’re best friends and you’re partners in something like Lit – it’s our business and our life, it’s like losing a limb. It definitely brought the rest of us together — Kevin [Baldes] and Jeremy [Popoff] and I –and [we] pulled some deeper, sentimental songs when we wrote ‘The View From The Bottom.’ There are songs that are therapeutic for us. Lyrics have always been important to us but it’s a little less about the partying and drinking – we have those songs on here but it’s more about, just life. What does the title ‘The View From the Bottom’ specifically mean to you? It was an image that came to us more than what it actually says. On the cover, it’s us raising our glasses and it’s sort of like this new beginning in a way and we have a song called ‘Here’s To Us’ – this whole record is all about family and unity and that’s just the toast. ‘The View From the Bottom’ is looking up at the bottom of a glass. It was great seeing you onstage [during your ShipRocked set]. You guys have been away for a while – what did you guys miss most about playing shows and touring? That was the part we missed the most – getting out there. We did continue to do occasional one off shows, it was just enough to keep us going but really getting out on the road over the summer was awesome – just everyday waking up on the tour bus, hanging out after. You have nowhere else to go except back on the bus so it’s cool to hang out with people and reconnect with fans, new fans that were too young to come out to the shows before –we’re meeting a lot of those people and now they’re old enough to drink, so a lot of raising glasses with new people. What made you guys decide to write and create music again? Nathan Walker, our drummer now, he was really close with Allen [Shellenberger], it was when we decided to induct him into the group — I don’t know it was weird, everything just lined up and that’s when songs started to flow. We continued to write because we’re songwriters outside of the band, as well, but actual Lit music just wasn’t coming to us, everything we would right we’d be like “That’s not Lit.” My brother and I we do most of the writing and the songs just started feeling like Lit again and so we just went for it. Was there every a moment where you thought you and the rest of Lit might not ever make music together again or did you feel that it would take some time and happen naturally? We knew that we would always make music together because there really isn’t any other option. We’ve spent our entire lives doing this and it’s just what we are and we just have such a cool fanbase all over the world and constantly getting hit up by people who want new music. I just felt like we owed it to ourselves as a band, we owed it to the fans that have been so patient and we didn’t want to put out some half assed record just because it had taken so long. We wanted to deliver something that we’re proud of. What are plans for Lit in 2013? We’re planning on getting back out on the road and probably writing another record, too. We’re not going to sit around and wait, we’re feeling creative. The fire’s back and passion’s there and we just want to keep it going. Watch Lit’s Music Video for ‘The Broken’ ? Papa Roach Unveil ‘Where Did the Angels Go’ Video

Photo by Chris Konigsmayr Papa Roach are definitely as hot as ever and audiences get a glimpse of that with the band’s latest video for ‘Where Did The Angels Go.’ The song is the latest single off the group’s ‘ The Connection ‘ album and you can definitely feel the sparks flying. The video finds the band performing inside what appears to be a rundown industrial warehouse, though the artwork for ‘The Connection’ hangs suspiciously in the background. The group deliver a high-adrenaline performance of the song as the camera work uses quick cuts, shaky movement and bright and dark lighting to give the video a more jarring feel. The final effect is the usage of sparks flying and fire breaking out on certain instruments that show exactly how hot this performance is. ‘Where Did the Angels Go’ is off to a solid start for the band and it’s currently doing battle in Loudwire’s Cage Match . The song should become one of the band’s live favorites. The group has been enjoying a European tour with Stone Sour over the last month, giving them their first chance to test out the music from their new album since Jacoby Shaddix’s vocal surgery this summer. Papa Roach and Stone Sour will return to the States early next year  for a co-headlining North American tour. Rush, Heart + Public Enemy Lead 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Class

Mike Lawrie / Mark Davis / Stephen Lovekin, Getty Images The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its class of 2013 inductees, and leading the charge are Rush , Heart and Public Enemy. There have been many fans on the hard rock and classic rock side who have been clamoring for Rush to get their due, and next year they will be among the class of new inductees. “It’s a terrific honor and we’ll show up smiling,” said vocalist-bassist Geddy Lee to Rolling Stone . “It made my mom happy, so that’s worth it.” Lee was well aware of the fan support to get them into the Rock Hall, adding, “It was a cause they championed. I’m very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure.” Heart , like Rush, had been passed over on their first try, but sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson  & co. will enter the Rock Hall in 2013. Singer Ann Wilson said, “Some people have an idea of what the shape of rock and roll is supposed to look like. We’re not really it. Personally, that’s why I think it’s taken awhile … We’re always traveling and out there doing it. It can start to feel like you’re a tree falling in the forest, but nobody notices. So this kind of acknowledgement is really sweet.” On the rap side, Public Enemy became the fourth hip-hop act to be inducted, following Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys . The group crossed boundaries with their collaboration with  Anthrax  on the rap-meets-metal single ‘Bring the Noise.’ This year’s other inductees include singer-songwriter-composer Randy Newman, disco queen Donna Summer and blues great Albert King. Also joining the Rock Hall are Quincy Jones and Lou Adler, both of whom will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers. The 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place Apr. 18 at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater and will air on HBO May 18. Meanwhile, finalists like Deep Purple, N.W.A. and Joan Jett didn’t make the cut for the 2013 class. In Flames Guitarist Bjorn Gelotte Talks Life on the Road, Randy Blythe, Owning a Pub + More

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire In Flames kicked off the year with a headlining trek with Trivium and Kyng , and they are currently on a major U.S. tour with Lamb of God , Hatebreed and Sylosis . Loudwire recently had the chance to catch up with In Flames guitarist Bjorn Gelotte before the band played New York City’s Roseland Ballroom. Gelotte talked all about his relationship with the bands on the bill, as well as offering his view on Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe ‘s incarceration in the Czech Republic. He also spoke about owning a pub with his bandmate, what In Flames will be up to in 2013 and much more. Describe your relationship with the bands on this bill? Lamb of God is a fantastic band to work with — we’ve toured with them before and all the other guys as well. We didn’t know Sylosis before, I didn’t know them before but they are perfect English gentlemen and they’re really good at what they do and of course Hatebreed [laughs], who doesn’t love Hatebreed? When you heard about Randy Blythe’s arrest, what did you think about this whole situation? I had such a mixed feeling — of course you feel really sad about somebody getting hurt as bad as dying from it, at the same time you know how it is onstage. I highly doubt he did anything in rage; I just think that was a very unfortunate accident. I felt really bad, at the same time I felt like [Blythe] handled it really well — he stood up for it and said, “I’m here, you know where to find me if there’s anything, I won’t hide. If you guys find a case around this I’ll be there,” and that’s a standup thing to do. Whether you crowd surf or not, there’s always a possibility of getting injured at metal shows … It’s sometimes surprising that it doesn’t happen more often. I’ve seen some really crazy pits, circle pits and it could get really violent. Most of the time I think people in the pits try to take care of each other – if somebody falls down they try to pick them up and seem friendly about it. It’s a weird thing – you would never find me in a circle pit or mosh pit. Does the experience of what Randy went through affect the way you perform onstage or your mindset of what a fan might do when you are onstage? No. We’re really aware of the audience and we try obviously to spur them to stage dive, well maybe not stage dive but to crowd surf and run around a bit. At the same time we have big confidence in the security working because they’re not there to save us from the fans, they’re there to save the fans – maybe from each other sometimes but they’re actually doing a really good job. It’s a lot of big men taking care of small kids, it’s really funny sometimes — they just carry them up with one arm. ‘Sounds of a Playground Fading’ is only a year and a half old, but has there been any progress on material for a new album? Not really. I know it sounds weird but being on tour, it’s not very inspirational. It’s a great forum to talk about music, it’s a forum to meet other musicians but to create it’s not — it’s also very impractical. It’s a bunch of gear that you need, the right software to work and I’m just like “F— it, I’ll just wait until I get back home.” I have a studio at home so I just push the power button and I’m rolling. What do you usually find inspiration from, when creating music? I don’t look for a theme or story or anything, I just go with whatever melodies seems to be bouncing around in this empty head of mind — melodies and riffs and when you just warm up or noodle around, ideas come up. Throughout this year, what has been the funniest moment on tour or the funniest thing a fan has said to you? We hear all sorts of s—t. [Laughs] One funny moment was on this tour actually. I came into the dressing room in San Antonio and I saw this big stuffed bear in the dressing room and at that moment I knew how this tour was going to be. Sure enough, the bear ended up on the bus and stays with us. Where did the bear come from and where is it now? It’s still here – he was a hazard being up in the front lounge so we had to have him in the merch trailer but he’s all dressed up and nice. He joins us for walks and stuff, it’s funny if you’re on the road. What are your touring plans for 2013? We have lots of plans actually, there’s going to be a lot of touring – hopefully coming back over here, fairly soon, right after New Year’s. We’re doing the 70,000 tons of metal Caribbean Cruise thingy – weather wise it should be fantastic but I don’t know about the stage conditions and all that. We’ll try to link that to some more touring. We, of course, have the summer festival season coming up and we’re going to try to hit a lot of festivals – nothing really confirmed yet. Most of that will be confirmed by a month or two. [Editor’s note: Shortly after the interview, In Flames did in fact confirm a 2013 U.S. tour with Demon Hunter, All Shall Perish and Battlecross.] You and your bandmate, bassist Peter Iwers, have a restaurant in Sweden 2112, how is that venture going? It’s great, it’s a lot of fun, it’s a lot of different things to think about. We’ve been talking about it for years — he wanted a restaurant , I wanted a bar. I like beer, he likes food. It was hard in the beginning to mix the two because it was really fine dining, great menus, a fantastic chef but now we’ve tried to relax it a little bit, so it’s not that white table cloth setting. It’s more like burgers and beer which works really good with the rock, metal attitude – for grownups. Would you ever think about bringing it to the States? I would love to, that’s a whole different ball game. We’re really strict in Sweden when it comes to alcohol and there’s a lot of bulls—t you have to deal with in order to get the license. I have no idea whatsoever how to get a liquor license here but that’s probably in the future. Have you learned any cooking techniques from being in the restaurant / bar business? Yes, to make an awesome coleslaw for instance. It’s not as easy as you think. I’ve learned to not be afraid to try out things – it’s not science, it’s very much feeling when you season food and the right temperatures and everything. When you see the [workers in the kitchen] they have a stove on all day and it’s really inspiring to see them cooking for 50 people and they do it in no time. I haven’t been in the kitchen working – I’ve just seen them and it’s like, “Okay I’ll stay in the bar,” and I’m not even working there, I’m on the outside of the bar drinking beers – one of the perks of being the owner. Volbeat to Debut New Material During 2013 Danish Tour

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Danish rockers Volbeat have kept quiet for most of the latter part of 2012, but that’s partly because they’ve been working on new music. The group reveal in a new posting that they’re just about ready to share some of their fresh material and will test it out while playing dates in their home country early next year. The band has booked a five-stop Danish trek that will take place between Feb. 19-24 next year. This will mark the band’s first shows in Denmark after nearly two years of life traveling the world in support of their ‘Beyond Hell / Above Heaven’ album. The dates will take place in small clubs, making the experience of being the first to hear the new material all the more special. After the February string of shows, the group will kick off a North American tour in March before heading off to Europe over the summer months to partake in the festival season. As for the new album, there’s not a confirmed title or release date as of yet, but the band is expected to have the disc in stores at some point in 2013.
